Suspect arrested in beating of elderly Bradenton man in speeding case

MANATEE -- Investigators continue to search for two more suspects in the beating of a 70-year-old man after he tried to get them to slow their car down as they rode through a residential neighborhood last week, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Leon Rogers was arrested Monday and charged with battery on a person over 65. He was released on a $1,500 bond from the Manatee County jail early Tuesday afternoon just before his first hearing in court.

Detective Rebecca Angel was at the hearing as the State Attorney's Office asked a judge to revoke Rogers' bond for previous charges. Manatee County Judge Marc Gilner said the matter would have to be presented to the judge presiding over the case.

The search continues for the other two suspects, Angel said.

James Gorman was pushing his wheelchair-bound wife down the street in the 400 block of 60th Drive West in Pride Park at about 5:30 p.m. Friday, with their granddaughter, 7, on her lap during an afternoon stroll when the suspects reportedly came speeding down the road. His attempt to slow them down resulted in the beating.

"There were children all over," Gorman said a day later. "I stepped out to slow them down."

The car stopped and Rogers, the front passenger, reportedly directed a few nasty words at Gorman and then punched him. Trying to defend himself, the elderly man punched him back as the other backseat passenger got out of the car. The three men went on to beat, kick and punch Gorman until he lost consciousness.

Leon Rogers was arrested Monday and charged with battery on a person over 65.

Is a crime more or less serious if the victim is over 65?

We already know it is more serious if the victim is black (and the perp is white) or gay (and the perp is straight).

Now age is a factor, and does that also depend on the age of the perp?

Of course, now that Obama's death panels are in force, terminating an old person might soon be as acceptable as terminating an unborn child.

# “teens” obviously. Can I be accused of “hate speech” for calling them TEENS?

This guy is obviously already embarked on a lifetime career of chronic criminal offenses, yet he keeps getting low-bonded out by apparently uncaring, unthinking liberal judges.

He'll end up murdering someone someday, probably while out on bond or on parole thanks to those in the judiciary who are soft on the Amish....and who allow them to rule the streets of too many of our local towns.

$1500 seems to be a pretty low bail for Mr. Rogers, especially considering the notoriety and seriousness of the case- as well as the fact that his cronies involved in the case are still at large.

Maybe the hope is that Rogers will lead them to the other suspects.

I don't know about the first one, but, the last may want a paternity test.

A bond of only $1500? These are vicious, murdering thugs whose main claims to fame are a depraved indifference to human life and their me1enin content.

It's too bad Gramps wasn't carrying. He would have done the world a favor by blowing these low-life bastards away.

It’s probably, in part, due to the fact he always shows up for trial. He’s considered low flight risk.

I guess its fortunate for Mr. Rogers that he has a long rap sheet and has been given a chance to show his reliability in making it to court.
