I've never “lost” my job, but have always resigned and found another one, usually never skipping a paycheck!
(Temporary employment agencies paid way more than unemployment benefits, and I could say no, if I didn't want a particular position)
Nowadays, at my age and skillset, I would probably choose to pursue 1099’d positions, instead of signing up with a temp agency.
For the fun of it, I posted my resume (IT support mostly) to see what if anything kicks back. Right now I am doing OK and can’t complain too much but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared in case things change at the office.
That’s what I was thinking; since they maxed out their extended unemployment and just lost their business in June, I imagine they started the business after one or both lost their job.
You forgot to add: “ Because of Obama’s economic policies”.
It’s important to look at this on the grand scale. 1.3 million people taking a hit all at once is likely not going to have a big direct impact on the economy, but there are going to be some ripples.
To start with, unemployment over time tends to be cumulative. That is, even with a government check, they were using up a lot of the “fat” in their lives. Not just cutting back, but converting resources into cash. Everything from pawn shops to selling things on Craigslist and ebaY.
The biggest impact will be on charities, who are already feeling the strain, but it will just keep getting worse and worse.
From an economics standpoint, it would be wise to see what other ripples might be attributed to this.
The local fast food #1 is $8. That is crazy.
Brown Bagging it is so much cheaper.
I hear that people can collect unemployment checks for up to 99 weeks these days. That's almost two full years.
If these folks had gotten help from their family and taken lower paying jobs when they first lost their t-shirt business, they'd probably be in the black by now.
Why don’t they consider getting a JOB!!
Good for you ma’am!
My knowledge regarding “benefits” comes from watching politicians trade our tax money for votes and seeing what happens when they take advantage of people who are not taught the ways of citizenship, freedom and the associated personal responsibilities.
I’ve worked my whole life and never “collected” anything I haven’t earned.
I’ve been broke plenty of times, but never “poor.” ;-)
Nobody has had their unemployment benefits run out before this?
Wow! Who knew?
I suspect folks will do what all the other folks did when their benefits ran out. They either got a job or did without.
Once again, who knew?
This isn’t something new. It’s how it has always worked. Those on unemployment now have received up to six times what others before them received. Enough already. This had to end something. It is ending now.
Dumpster diving behind classy establishments - found a real treat behind Krispy Kreme the other day..
Anyway, there are plenty of jobs out there for those who are losing their unemployment benefits. Hopefully they will go back to work. Unemployment benefits should never be longer than a few weeks. When it was 99 week, most people were miraculously finding work in the 98th week! Funny how that works out.
A good barometer of the economy is the average wait time for a table at a casual restaurant chain on a Friday or Saturday night. Such as Applebees, Olive Garden or Outback. In my neck of the woods, it is still a solid hour to get a table at those times. Even on Thursday nights, it can be up to a half hour wait.
I had to cut back on my dining out but that was only because I need to cut back on my waistline. It was a bit of a shock to realize we were dining out an average of 4-5 nights a week. It does kind of sneak up on you, especially when you are surrounded by endless chains of restaurants like I am. I remember when I was growing up, dining out was a very rare treat and even then, it was usually some clam shack or pizza house.
I know someone who was let go at the age of 65. This person starting collecting Social Security benefits immediately, AND unemployment, with no intention of ever going back to work. That was FIVE YEARS AGO, and the unemployment checks STILL keep rolling in. On top of that, this person was given a package from the employer that included the equivalent of salary for one and a half years and was still able to collect unemployment because it was not stated as being “salary”.
And that’s just one case of abuse.
There is no way there are enough jobs to make up for those that have gone overseas in the past decades; pointing to low unemployment in low-population states is disingenuous.
The work the Joad family took in “The Grapes of Wrath” isn’t even offered to Americans anymore.
I’m working and trying to pay down debt; I’ve done many of the things you mention, and like the fact that an unintended consequence is how much of my earnings no longer trickle down to Obama voters in fast-food places, work cafeteria, and such.
So I see.
It's based on the number of people I know who have been unemployed for a while.
Now, what evidence to you have to offer to support your belief that all long term unemployed are just moochers who don't want to work?
Ding! Winner!! That's precisely why I cut back in some areas that I did. For example, I brown-bag my lunch every day (have for the last nearly 5 years now) so I can deprive the Obama fast-food workers AND the City of Chicago (Rahm Emmanuel) of the fruits of my labors. I don't buy anything in Chicago so I cannot get charged sales tax in that crap-hole Chicago where the Sales Tax is at or near 10%.
Considering it's darn difficult to eat lunch in the part of Chicago where I work for less than $8-$12 (unless one goes to McDonalds .. bleecchhh!)
Wife went so far as to calculate how much it costs to pack me a lunch every day, which came out to just under $2/day. So I'm saving @ $200/mo by simply brown bagging my lunch. That's not chump change.
