Senator John McCain on Sunday told thousands of Ukrainian protesters camped on Kiev's main square that Ukraine's destiny lay in Europe and that it would make Europe better.
"Ukraine will make Europe better and Europe will make Ukraine better," he said to crowds protesting against President Viktor Yanukovich's U-turn in trade policy away from Europe towards Russia.
"We are here to support your just cause, the sovereign right of Ukraine to determine its own destiny freely and independently. And the destiny you seek lies in Europe," said McCain, a leading Republican voice on US foreign policy.
McCain is in Ukraine with a Connecticut Democrat, Senator Chris Murphy.
Speaking to CNN on Sunday, McCain said: What we're trying to do is try to bring about a peaceful transition here, that would stop the violence and give the Ukrainian people what they unfortunately have not had, with different revolutions that have taken place a real society. This is a grassroots revolution here it's been peaceful except when the government tried to crack down on them, and the government hasn't tried that since.

McCain is a disgusting human being.
>>>Your post ignores the fact that millions of the Russians who are there DON’T belong there to begin with, and millions more Ukrainians who should be there are dead because of the Russians who are.<<<
One in about eight people living in Russia has a Ukrainian surname.
Rethink your post from that perspective.
Face it, Ukraine is a nation-state for a very brief period of time to have any viable national identity.
So McCain sides with the ‘Occupy Ukraine’ crowd.
Figures.
The Ukrainian government is right to stay out of the EU disaster. All money is being funneled into the failing PIGS governments. And there is a significant loss of self-rule upon joining the EU
Thank you for your encouraging words, and your support. Please continue to help spread the word that the Ukraine protestors are paid, reactionary bourgeois who do not appreciate the value of rejoining the Russian Empire. As you know, I only have Ukraine's best interests at heart.
Sincerely,
Col. Vladimir Putin
President of Russia
Although I am not a big supporter of Europe--just about all European countries tend to be congenial to democratic socialism--I do believe that the European model (as flawed as it is) is superior to the Russian model (which is steeped in authoritarianism).
WTF?
Are you suggesting that the Ukraine SHOULD join the EU???
Membership in the EU is far more preferable than membership in some runt form of the Soviet Union.
imagine if Mexico wanted to take parts of the USA and two Russian officials came to CA to protest with the La Raza, now imagine these two Russian officials now saying that if any violence by the police will give the USA sanctions.
MCain is such a frigging joke
I am not aware that refusal to join the EU means automatic membership in the ex-Soviet bloc.
Are you suggesting that if the Ukraine doesn’t join the EU that their only option is to for another Soviet Union?
There IS the option to remain independent.
Never vote for a McCain again, that is a promise.
Is that you John? Just lurking I guess.
That says that the very first thing we need to do is rescind the 17'th amendment and return the election of US senators to the state houses. That would also resolve the John McCain problem.
This is like claiming there is no Kurdish national identity simply because the Turks, Persians, and Hashimites have been oppressing the Kurds for centuries, or that there is no such place as Tibet because a more powerful country claims it.
Rose-colored contac lenses.
McCain is so OFF, that it causes me concern for his own safety.
Going off to the Middle-East to meet with terrorists..., the guy is a danger to himself, let alone the nation.
Concurring bump.
The dirty secret inside the Occupy Ukraine camp is most of them want to LEAVE the country as soon as possible, either for better wages elsewhere in Europe or to engage in ‘benefits tourism’. They need EU status to make that possible.
Just recently, the British parliament began debating setting limits on the number of foreign EU “workers” they’ll accept, primarily as the result of an overload of other recent Eastern European EU members from Romania and Bulgaria.
we are talking about us and today not yesteryear and Bolsheviks.
It is more to the tune of Russians coming here to protest, you would be outraged and rightly so
