Nelson Mandela, the revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of decades of apartheid, has died, South African President Jacob Zuma announced late Thursday.
Mandela was 95.
"He is now resting. He is now at peace," Zuma said. "Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father."
"What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human," the president said in his late-night address. "We saw in him what we seek in ourselves."
Mandela will have a state funeral. Zuma ordered all flags in the nation to be flown at half-staff from Friday through that funeral.
Mandela, a former president, battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.
With advancing age and bouts of illness, Mandela retreated to a quiet life at his boyhood home in the nation's Eastern Cape Province, where he said he was most at peace.
Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the consciousness of the nation and the world.

I never cared for Tutu, he was another liberal, but this guy masquerading as a Christian
Did Tutu stand up for the unborn child, did he renounce gay marriage
Just saying
Tutu is about as much of a “Christian” as Jim Jones was.
Okay, I am already Mandela’d out. The damn media can talk about nothing else. I’m sick of it already.
exactly.
Trying to compare a terrorist blowing up innocent people to George Washington fighting British troops is so far off-base to not be worth considering.
Excellent posts .... Well said.
Stay safe !
but but he “changed” they said....

RE Mandela:
Ehh... Buh-bye...
Gone home to the Great Collective Utopia... wherever the hell that is.
appears to be heavy chains on those poor animals
No, no, no, not Jefferson. He LOVED the French. Practically facilitated their cause here in the US to our detriment. The best he did was buy from the French (Napoleon). This man is so overrated.
Frankly, I was ambivalent about the man: His associations with Marxist revolutionaries (think: the African National Congress) troubled me. But his fight against apartheid--surely one of the most horrendous evils of the second half of the twentieth century--was an inspiration.
And, as George Will (quite correctly) noted on Special Report last night, on FNC: His task was even more difficult--and therefore, even more amazing--than that of his American counterpart, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For King, at least, could appeal to America's founding document, the Constitution, and simply note that its ideals had gone unfulfilled; but Mandella had nothing similar available to him, to argue against blacks' second-class status in South Africa.
May his family take comfort in the memory of the man.
Just relax, watch football, and everything will be back to ‘normal’ by this time next week. Until he’s buried, that’s all the MSM will cover, unless there’s a bigger news development that they cannot ignore easily. .............
Concur ..... As I stated elsewhere here on FR....terrorists should never die of old age.
Stay safe !!
Did you know your “President” ordered that US flags be flown at half-staff to honor the African Communist terrorist? And he is not even an American, but then, neither is Barcak-Al-Obama.
Here in soviet Red Hampshire; I was surprised to see that a number of flags were still flying at the top of their poles. Schools and other communist institutions were at half-mast, but many businesses just flew them as usual...have to mention a truck with an ‘Oathkeeper’ symbol that also displayed a Grumpy Cat ‘Molon Labe’ sticker...almost ran off the road laughing.
Exactly. Wherever the HELL that is.
I have the same feeling I had when JFK, Jr. crashed: WTF are we celebrating this name?
At least Kennedy was an American citizen though.
“Say Hi to Trayvon for me.”
Tutu is pro-homo, says he wouldn’t want to go to a Heaven that looked down on sodomites.
Not saying that the guy is a voice of reason or sanity. Just saying that he was a go-to guy in the media once upon a time, fell out with Mandela and the ANC, and now all of that is put into the closet while false histories are fabricated of a new Camelot.
Considering the faint praise, backhanded complements, and outright calls for eternal damnation from the journ0lists about the deaths of Reagan and Thatcher, I find this mythmaking of Mandela (and the complete blacking out of his friendship with dictators and sponsors of terror) too much to take.
If you are watching football on ESPN, you will still be inundated with celebrations of a flawed man.
This wall to wall coverage is making me sick.
Good thing we gots ObamaCare..............
