China responded on Thursday to growing international defiance of its new air-defense zone in the East China Sea both by sending advanced fighter jets to the area and trying to play down any threat of military retaliationunderlining the confusion and escalated tension over the territorial dispute.
The announcement by China's air force that it had sent fighters and an early-warning aircraft to patrol the zone came just a few hours after Japan and South Korea, following the U.S.'s lead, said their military aircraft had flown into the zone without notifying Beijing over the past few days, and would continue to do so.
The U.S. challenged the zone's credibility on Tuesday by sending in two B-52 bombers without informing Chinese authorities, who had warned when they declared the zone on Saturday that such incursions would be met with unspecified "defensive emergency measures."

China looking to underscore its expanded naval capability, challenge the West in proclaiming itself the region's de-facto super power, seems to have it relegated itself to status of "not ready for prime-time naval hegemonist".
The U.S. challenged the zone's credibility
Doing what it does best, the Obama administration challenging credibility at every opportunity.
China is pushing to see just how far it can get, for nothing.
It’s about to find out, not much further. (I hope. With this administration you never know if they will negotiate away Japan and other nations in the extended region and claim victory.)

When I took a journalism course in HIGH SCHOOL, the first thing they taught us was never assume your audience has any knowledge of the subject.
I have heard a few things but no specifics on the air defense zone and without a lot more specifics I can’t put any context around the article.
By calling it “China’s air defense zone” you’ve already ceded at least some of the diplomatic ground that China wanted.
I agree.
Completely.
Since other countries have interjected themselves on the side of Japan, apparently even the Philippines and Vietnam have done so, this should be enough to tell China to back off.
If this had stayed between the Chinese and Japan, it could have gotten really bad
Exactly, the author should have mentioned right near the start that this was a zone declared unilaterally by the Chinese over Japanese islands that China claims.
As far as I can tell the islands have always been Japanese.
(likewise the Dokdo islands have always been Korean and Japan wrongly claims them)
I hope you’re right. I’m not convinced China gives a fig what other nation’s think. I doubt the Philippines and Vietnam are on it’s next Five Year Plan card list.
Only heavy push back will blunt it’s intentions, and I’m fairly certain only then for a while as it builds it’s military assets and capabilities.
IMO, it is focused on dismantling the U. S. military presence world-wide.
I believe it has it’s fingers in things we haven’t been told of, and our leadership probably knows it full well.
I am in increasing agreement with you.
China is opposed to America.
And American “capitalists” are helping China.
This is a big, big problem.
True, it is focused on Japan because it is the strongest adversary. The Philippines might as well not have a military but they know China is the bully. The bully is picking the big boy because it hopes all the others will be intimidated too. This is probably happening because the US is so weak right now.
If Japan can get Putin to take their side, then this definitely becomes more than China can chew.
China is destroying it’s people and land. They are left to try and aquire other land in order to get what they need to survive.
Some day there will be a war with China as I see it unless the people from inside reform it. We need some reform as well.
You’re correct. Why would the title ever say China’s “air defense zone”. What’s Obama going to do? Compromise and say they can only steal half of the territory they’re claiming as their own?
Confucius say man who yell at hornets get stung
Well you are one person who is not in tune with the Neocon drumbeat that Iran is our most dangerous enemy and our trading with China makes them our friend. That's what trade does, right? Wonder why we use sanctions?
Wake up America, China and Russia are our most serious enemies.
Zero having Secretary Mr. Ed disavow our own Monroe doctrine makes more sense now. Not that I agree, and prolly just coincidence.
a timely Chinese military conflict will certainly serve as a distraction
I think China is reaching a point where conservatives need to take a careful look at what it is exactly, they are helping to create.
China has for a very long time, been a good partner. But now China exports the most in the world.
America is now number 2.
China does not allow Americans to immigrate or own companies. Or even to own a majority of Chinese businesses.
China does not hold elections.
China pretty much, just takes stuff over.
American conservatives, you really have to ask your self after some point, what exactly you are helping to create in China.
Remember China has five times America’s population.
We need jobs right here in America.
Bring home American jobs.
Amazing that you blame it all on conservatives
I do see the media are quick to concede that the zone belongs to China and they have thereby acquired some rights that didn't already have.
