HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) Veterans are rallying around a local bar whose owners say they have been ordered to removed a sign that salutes their service.
Thank a veteran for your freedom! says a large sign perched above Johnnys Booze and Pool. Vets love it and make up a significant part of the establishments clientele.
I love this place. The sign gives me the pride back that I lost I struggled a lot when I first came back, an Army vet told CBS2′s Stacey Butler.
But someone complained to the city about the sign, and now the bars owners say theyve been ordered to take it down.
We received a letter in the mail from the city stating that we have to remove it within two days or they were going to fine us, like, $940, says co-owner John Marovic.
Co-owner Johnny Kresimir says he has until Tuesday to remove the sign or pay the fine. He plans to fight it, and has issued a plea on Facebook for support.
Huntington Beach Mayor Pro-Tem Matthew Harper says he has contacted the city manager about the issue and is waiting for an answer. Harper says he would support granting a variance to allow the sign to remain standing.
The issue has some of the signs supporters scratching their heads.
Said one veteran: I can understand city ordinances, but its been up there for 10 years. I dont understand why its a problem now.
A "liberal" no doubt.................

Who’s the b@stard? Show yourself, d!ckhead!
):^(
So, let me get this straight:
"Booze" = Okay.
"Thank a veteran" = Offensive.
“A “liberal” no doubt.................”
Absolutely. HB is full of the B-stards. Unfortunately the entire coast as in right on the beach is full of that trash. It’s a miracle there’s any space left for people.
How could this possibly be offensive to anyone? I'm dumbfounded.
What happened to the concept of being able to face your accuser in a court of law?
They are by definition, cowards................
And an Obama voter for sure.
Don’t be. It’s what liberals do. It’s the way they think, if you can call it that. It’s the “I wonder what I can do to make somebody miserable today by being ‘offended’” line of logic...............
What? The Constitution is a living document! It means what we say it means anytime we say it!.................
CaliPornia, New Yawk, and MASS, Three inflamed Pustules on America’s backside.
Yep...another shining example of freedom of speech in the country formerly known “land of the free”. Liberalism—new speak for authoritarianism.
Put a cross on it and send the complainer to the looney farm.
Just tile the outside of the bar and put the message in as a mosaic. Sign? We don’t have any sign.
Great idea! BUT THERE WOULD STILL BE ‘LIBERAL’ IDIOTS WHO WOULD DREAM UP SOME ‘ORDINANCE’ THAT WAS BEING BROKEN..............
The cities have sign ordinances but enforce them only when it is expedient or to harass someone who doesn’t agree with them.
“its been up there for 10 years. I dont understand why its a problem now.”
It’s a problem now because the communists have taken over.
HB used to be a cool place to hang out and do all sorts of things. Now they’re crapping on veterans and charging 10 cents for bags when a person buys groceries or whatever. Leftism seems to have infected their body politic and needs to be purged. Maybe I’ll encourage my dad to run for city council since he’s a resident. Try to straighten them out a bit.
The cities have sign ordinances but enforce them only when it is expedient or to harass someone who doesnt agree with them.
An ordinance crafted in such a way that it could sit dormant, but be conveniently available when needed to harass or accuse. It sure seems that way with a lot of regulations and policies these days. Impossible and wholy impractical to adhere to. Obviously they are not designed for up front proper use and guidance, but as capricious, backhanded wollups when violators need to be smacked into line. A beast.gov variant of the Knockout Game.
