Can you feed yourself on $4.50 a day?
Thats the typical daily benefit for someone who gets food stamps. Millions of low-income Americans are dependent on the program, which is called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, for some if not all of their food money. SNAP benefits have just been reduced slightly, with the sunset of an economic-stimulus addition, and will likely be cut more by Congress before the year is through.
Here in Clark County, Share and the Clark County Food Bank are inviting the community to get a sense of life on that kind of budget by accepting the SNAP Challenge. Participants will commit to eating all meals from that tight SNAP budget of just $4.50 per day.
Visit clarkcountysnapchallenge.org to register for one day, three days or seven days in November. Youll be provided with guidelines as well as suggested shopping lists and recipes. All participants are encouraged to share their experience on facebook.com/clarkcountysnapchallenge, and to connect with other participants at #CCSNAPchallenge.
At 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 19, SNAP Challenge participants will share their stories at the Vancouver Community Library, 901 C Street. Thats part of a series of activities planned for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 17-23.
"Work?"
Live on $4.50/day? Are they nuts? I worked and provided for myself so I wouldn’t need to limit myself. In America, the greatest nation in the history of the world, in most cases if a person is poor, they are poor by choice. If a person cannot make it on minimum wage job, get TWO minimum wage jobs. Or three, whatever it takes. Or start a business. There are no limits other than the ones we put on ourselves.
No the $4.50 a day is a lie. A simple lie.
The better question is, can you afford to feed 4-5 people a day @$189/31= $6.10 each.
That requires no effort at all.
You said it best mrsmith.... Liberals just keep repeating this lie because they love pity parties - even those based on lies.
You are not supposed to live on food stamps. Its a supplement.
So the lady in Florida that said she couldn’t make it with the SNAP reverting to its prior rate said she had a family of 4 and had to get by with $800 in SNAP. That’s $6.67 per person per day, not $4.50. We are self sufficient and spend less per person in groceries.
They should easily be able to cover this small cut-back in the gigantic surging increases of the past 5 years with all the illegitimate (unearned) Earned Income Tax Credits they’ve been ripping off so fast the IRS has addmitted they can never recover!!!
How about $2.15 a day? It can be done!

In the mid-90’s I fed three adults (2 adult males and me; freeloader BIL) and three teenage boys for about $150 a month. That’s $5 a day for ALL of us.
However, I DID keep an extensive garden and we hunted and fished. Gawd FORBID anyone try that THESE days. *Rolleyes*
Since when is it MY responsibility to feed you anyway? These people give me a pain! My two kids are in their 20s. They are gainfully employed, they go to work every day, they support themselves, they helped pay for their education, they have sizable savings accounts and investments, and my daughter suffered an extremely serious traumatic brain injury when she was 17, which is no small obstacle to overcome. Why must I support capable adults with my taxes when I probably wouldn’t even do it for my own kids, other than an emergency (as mean as that sounds, but I taught them to be responsible for themselves).
Doesn’t the “S” in SNAP stand for supplemental? The program isn’t intended to be a free breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.
Perhaps I should say, “wasn’t intended”, because clearly there are some who think it should be.
And the media loves repeating this lie because about 10% of food stamp moneys end up in their pockets for the advertising costs of food.
What a racket.
Well, at least the media has to lie for their food stamp share, the recipients don’t even have to do that much.
That one hits close to home. Building a business. Not wanting, doing OK, should be doing quite well soon. But I splurged for $0.99 iPhones for me and my biz partner. Old versions - plain old iPhone 4s. Why was that a splurge? The over $30 in sales tax I had to pay per phone to California based on imputed value.
I have since moved back to Texas. Hence my rosy prospects.
PS I have been eligible for government freebies but refuse to be bought aka a slave.
no sweat.
Stretching it out a little.... 126 bucks a week means that I put steak and seafood back on the menu.
Stretching it out a little more .... 540 bucks for the month of November is more than my household budget (food AND sundries like detergent, shampoo, TP, etc etc etc).
So what's the big deal, here?
I just made 2 gallons of vegetable soup last
Sunday for < $5.
ate supper on it all week and froze 3 quarts.
A cheap, marked-down chunk of chuck, a dented can of peas and a couple of stalks of celery from a .99 cent head I bought at Aldis were the only things I didn’t grow..
I furnished the potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, corn, carrots, onions, green beans, eggplant, and cabbage myself.
Excellent observation!
The system is broken because incumbents use it to buy votes.
“I furnished the potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, corn, carrots, onions, green beans, eggplant, and cabbage myself.”
*APPLAUSE* BEST feeling in the world, ain’t it? :)
