An Ohio school district has agreed to keep a portrait of Jesus Christ off school property and pay a $95,000 fine in the face of legal pressure from the American Civil Liberties Union.
The Jackson City School District, located in Jackson, reached a deal on Friday after the ACLU, along with the Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation, sued the district in February, citing unconstitutional actions and charging that students and visitors to the school will continue to suffer permanent, severe and irreparable harm and injury, according to the lawsuit.
The picture had been hanging in Jacksons high school since 1947 as part of a Hall of Honor display meant to highlight famous historical figures.
The case could have ended before it began if the school had simply acknowledged that it is not the governments place to endorse one specific religion in a public school that children are legally required to attend, said James Hardiman, the legal director for Ohios ACLU chapter.

Depictions are not prohibited or they are prohibited? I was the principal I would have said “It’s just a guy, a street person.” - these ACLU types are sure going to be chagrined when they meet up in Heaven. I’d want to hear their excuses.
Just put up a picture of the sun. That’ll confuse them.
Matthew 10:33
But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
I wonder what the fine in the next life will be?
Freedom FROM Religion? I don’t know of any religion that forces people to join. And Islam is not a religion.
That’s a brilliant observation that under realization is difficult to understand. Maybe the school didn’t deny the identity of the person in the image as matter of principle.
Please see post #26.
Another “victory” over Christians brought to you by the hatred, vitriol, and intolerance of the militant atheist.
It wasn’t clear from the story.
The school took the picture down, but still got a “fine” of $95K?
And the “fine” goes to the ACLU and the Freedom From Religion kooks?
ACLU/FFR robbing from poor taxpayer parents...crazy.
Someone has a picture of Jesus? That would be extremely rare since cameras at the time were very expensive.
Terrible example you gave. You say that the ACLU would not have a problem with Mohammad at a Muslim school. I hope the wouldn’t. Jesus’ picture is in every classroom in Catholic schools throughout America. I went to Catholic school from Kindergarten through 12th grade and said the rosery, went to Mass and had the crusifix in every classroom. Those parents in that school should enroll their children in Carholic school. Not only is it full of religion, but the education is top notch.
Wonder why it took the ACLU so long to find out about it.

The Jackson City School District (U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Ohio)
An Ohio school district has agreed to keep a portrait of Jesus Christ off school property and pay a $95,000 fine in the face of legal pressure from the American Civil Liberties Union.
Jackson is right in the heart of the southern Ohio bible belt, my home area. There is no way that anyone could look at the culture of this area and conclude anything other than that it’s solidly Christian. Those who aren’t attenders themselves are culturally conservative Christian.
My point is that this is an OVERWHELMINGLY Christian region. Just like when the lawyers forced the 10 commandment be removed from our schools here where I live, the lawyers are denigrating the undeniable culture of the Jackson area. I have no doubt.
A person should not be surprised to see a people’s religion mentioned at any point of their daily lives. Forced excision of their religion or forced neutrality toward their religion is a pronouncement by authorities that their way is better than the people’s way. In other words, the authorities have placed their religious views over those of the people in that area. They have established a “correct religion”.
Also, they are attempting to enforce “freedom of worship” in place of “freedom of religion”. I am a Christian 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, anyplace I am. The authorities are telling me I can be a Christian ONLY on their schedule and their allowed locations.
God and the US Constitution say that I can be a Christian 24/7....that I have “free exercise”.
And, so does everyone else. So, the Constitutional Founders decided the best course for our nation was to live and let live. In other words, adults recognize that there are other religions than their own, and that those people follow their religion. It is better to just have everyone be themselves than to establish religion police to enforce the state’s ideas on religion.
Therefore, it is absolutely fine for that school district, in that area, to have Jesus hanging on their wall with no other religious or historical figures also present to give a picture of neutrality. Their area is NOT neutral. It is Christian.
Adults know it’s a Christian region and aren’t surprised. Despots know it’s a Christian region and want to make everyone bow to their authoritarian views.
It seems we have a "school levy" up almost every "off-election" date I turn around (those "special elections" in May/August), and for this apparently rural (?) community to hand over this kind of money to the A.C.L.U. because they can't afford to pursue their case any further in court...
I wish someone with deep pockets would take up their cause and put an end to this legalistic blackmail and thuggery!!
