Poll: Republican voters have embraced libertarian values
United Liberty ^ | 9/12/13 | Jason Pye

The libertarian philosophy is taking the Republican Party by storm, according to a poll conducted by FreedomWorks, a DC-based grassroots service center with over 6 million members.

With Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) and many other liberty-minded politicians gaining influence, libertarianism has generated new interest inside the Republican Party, much to the chagrin of the GOP's political establishment....

"FreedomWorks' poll shows that 42 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of the word ‘libertarian,' and only 10 percent don't know the word, compared to 27 percent who don't know nationally," they added.

And the term "libertarian" may still turn off some Republican voters, the basic message of the philosophy earns significant favor. The poll found that 68% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents agree with the statement that "individuals should be free to do as they like as long as they don't hurt others, and that the government should keep out of people's day-to-day lives."

What's more, an eye-popping 78% of Republicans consider themselves to be "fiscally conservative, but socially moderate," which is a significant finding given the debate in the GOP on social issues.

Looking outside of just the Republican box, the poll found that 66% of respondents consider themselves to fiscally conservative and socially moderate.

These numbers show that the libertarian message is appealing, not only to Republican voters, but also to all Americans; further advancing the case for conservative-libertarian fusionism as a way to promote free market ideals, limited government, and personal liberty....

I think that it is the Libertarian that needs to explain how he will use the government to force his libertine views on conservatives. What modern Libertarians seem to demand from conservatives is approval, not tolerance. Modern Libertarians seem to believe in liberty for me, but not for thee. They are perfectly willing to use government to enforce regulation of thought and speech.

Conservatives may tolerate homosexual marriage, but the government has no right to require that they endorse it.

Glad you’ve been watching. I apologize again for the goat example, and hope you’ve had some fun.

I’m sure 98% of the Western population shares that concern.

It is clear that libertarianism is about supporting conservative economics while diminishing and eliminating the social conservatism.

They are not the same. There is room for pro life people in the 2013 statement, especially compared to the Democrat party’s position on the issue.

There was no pro life room in the previous statement.

What is your opinion on price supports for dairy products and on farm sales of raw milk?

"I have a libertarian Streak in me....... libertarian leaning ..... a lot of that has to do with a philosophy libertarian embraces too".

Gene Eric hit it out of the park with his post 173, have another look at that post it was exceptional insight into this discussion.

You’re implicitly distinguishing a libertine from a libertarian.

I agree, the govt should not be forcing the citizens to support homosexual behavior — but unfortunately, the pendulum of statism has swung to the Left... if you will.

How do you find a pro-life position is this unequivocal support for unlimited, unrestrained, full term abortion?

“we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration.’

Conservative should not tolerate homosexual marriage since it is a direct attack on Christian beliefs and Christian churches.

The govt has to make decisions, laws and rules regarding homosexuality, for the military, for federal employment, for immigration, for many things.

This childish fantasy of la-la land is silly.

I could say the same thing, and would if I were a politician and asked directly.

freerepublic is a place where conservatives can speak openly and defend God and conservatism.

But the govt made law permitting what you’re saying it normally wouldn’t permit. Now that’s silly.

As far as the Libertarian Party goes, yes.

Most libertarians period.

Libertarianism has it's agenda and political goals, regardless of your personal areas of disagreement with the larger philosophy and political cause.

I'm not interested in your personal deviations from libertarian purity, my interest is in libertarianism's effective role in the war against conservatism.

Like I said I am a libertarian leaning conservative and I probably agree with you on most social issues. But the one social issue that is a high priority with me is stopping the homosexual agenda anti Christian agenda. I see that has being very dangerous to this nations moral fiber.

There’s a political void concerning liberty. Most political arguments in one way or another depend on govt enforcement. To suggest repeal, is to suggest anarchy which is unfortunate.

They left it up to each person versus demanding adherence to pro choice orthodoxy.

It’s not up to my ideal standards either, and they did not say that a woman had to check with noprogs or ansel12 before getting an abortion, but there is a difference.

Let me offer a what if......suppose the Libertarian Party changed and became pro life.......lets say no abortions after 12 weeks for example, and became border hawks, do you think in exchange the GOP would support disbanding the DEA / FDA and BATFE in order to build a new coalition to win some elections and shrink the government?
