Poll: Republican voters have embraced libertarian values
United Liberty ^ | 9/12/13 | Jason Pye

The libertarian philosophy is taking the Republican Party by storm, according to a poll conducted by FreedomWorks, a DC-based grassroots service center with over 6 million members.

With Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) and many other liberty-minded politicians gaining influence, libertarianism has generated new interest inside the Republican Party, much to the chagrin of the GOP's political establishment....

"FreedomWorks' poll shows that 42 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of the word ‘libertarian,' and only 10 percent don't know the word, compared to 27 percent who don't know nationally," they added.

And the term "libertarian" may still turn off some Republican voters, the basic message of the philosophy earns significant favor. The poll found that 68% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents agree with the statement that "individuals should be free to do as they like as long as they don't hurt others, and that the government should keep out of people's day-to-day lives."

What's more, an eye-popping 78% of Republicans consider themselves to be "fiscally conservative, but socially moderate," which is a significant finding given the debate in the GOP on social issues.

Looking outside of just the Republican box, the poll found that 66% of respondents consider themselves to fiscally conservative and socially moderate.

These numbers show that the libertarian message is appealing, not only to Republican voters, but also to all Americans; further advancing the case for conservative-libertarian fusionism as a way to promote free market ideals, limited government, and personal liberty....

You need to go check the Libertarian Party’s web site. Maybe you could send them an email to let them know how they aren’t “true” anymore.

How about simply posting their official position on abortion.

Abortion: "we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration."

Good for you on checking that. It’s not what it should be, but its not what it was.

Now, read my home page and come back and tell me I’m a Libertarian.

You are talking about the LP, they are nut jobs, not libertarians,

Oh stop it, they are one and the same, they are libertarianism in the real world of politics.

The reason libertarians are at war with conservatism is not their common economics and call for small government, it is the social issues and national defense.

Socialist Democrats put homosexuals in the military, and that great conservative GW Bush did not rescind DADT.

The official Libertarian party policy has gone from plainly pro choice to what is basically no official position.

You made that up, and reversed it, the position was for time limited abortions before Roe v Wade in the early 1970s, currently it is for full term, totally unrestricted abortions, zero restrictions.

The only thing I can say is that there are a lot of posters here at FR and in the Tea Party that consider themselves little l libertarians. They do not support the LP, they would have nothing to do with the LP, they are classical liberals and mostly agree with you on social issues (just like I mostly agree with you). So when someone says that are a little l libertarian perhaps it would be wise to cut them a little slack and not go into immediate attack mode.

Libertarians fought and campaigned for the homosexual agenda, and still do, even at freerepublic.

The libertarian position on homosexuality.
“”Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the government’s treatment of individuals, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws.””

Nonsense, they call themselves libertarians because they are social liberals and economic conservatives, as ridiculous as that fantasy is, most here at freerepublic are liberals on social issues, they just use weasel language to try to avoid saying it straight out.

I know what rinos and libertarians are doing when they push their agenda among conservatives, it is to get them to drop the social conservatism.

You sound like someone is very confused about what you align with.

I know this is tough for you, but I say again that sometime after Roe V Wade the LP position plainly stated a woman had a right to unrestricted abortion access. A year or two ago it changed to the current statement. If you still read that in there, very well. I see it as allowing pro life people into the Libertarian Party.

I see it as allowing pro life people into the Libertarian Party.

More insanity, their unlimited abortion position is as clear as ever, ""Abortion: "we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration.""

Here is their 1972 position pre-Roe v Wade limiting it to the first 100 days, "" We further support the repeal of all laws restricting voluntary birth control or voluntary termination of pregnancies during their first hundred days.""

By the 1974 platform they had dropped the 100 days, and called for full-term abortions. "" We further support the repeal of all laws restricting voluntary birth control or the right of the woman to make a personal moral choice regarding the termination of pregnancy.

Here is their 1990 position, zero restrictions, ""Recognizing that each person must be the sole and absolute owner of his or her own ibs body, we support the right of women to make a personal choice regarding the termination of pregnancy. We oppose the undermining of the right via laws requiring consent of the pregnant woman's parents, consent of the prospective father, waiting periods, or compulsory provision of indoctrination on medical risks or fetal development.""

>> but libertarians like Glenn Beck approve of gay marriage being licensed

Well, making law that forces the citizens to support homosexual behavior is certainly not libertarianism.

The Libertarian Party platform is hammered crap - we all know that.

It’s liberalism that’s in opposition to conservatism. And libertarianism in opposition to statism.

The Libertarian Party serves a combination of liberal and conservative views, The effective Republican Party serves liberal and conservative views, and Democrat Party serves the liberal view alone. There is no significant conservative party unless we consider the Tea Party.

There’s a libertarian view that is pro-life, pro-marriage, protective of youth, questions the WOD, and is for very small govt; i.e., conservative libertarianism.

The arguments assailing “libertarian immorality” really describe the Left’s influence on the Libertarian Party and its members, but are not representative of the definitive meaning of libertarianism — a meaning which doesn’t aim to define moral standards. And neither does statism define moral standards. It’s the moral vectors of liberalism and conservatism that establish what will be enforced via statism, or what will be left to chance via libertarianism.

It’s not enough to say one is conservative. It’s necessary to indicate to what degree the govt will be used to enforce one’s conservative views. If a lot, than that’s a conservative statist. If very little, that’s a conservative libertarian. Leftism is liberal statism.

Don’t be a statist!

They are the same, zero restrictions on abortion.

“Recognizing that each person must be the sole and absolute owner of his or her own body, we support the right of women to make a personal choice regarding the termination of pregnancy.”

“we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration.’
