How much was the purse the clerk showed Oprah? $1,000 or $25,000? If $1,000 then you could buythe arguement that the clerk didn't want to show the purse because she didn't think the customer could afford it. If it was a very expensive purse Ianthe $25,000+ Opeah's argument falls apart. By appearence only if you can afford a $25,000 purse you probably can afford the $38,000 one. If I go to a store to buy something and the clerk shows me something identical which costs a lot less I appreciate it. If they are close I'll evaluate the difference and make a choice. The only reason to take the more expensive identical product is to impress someone.

The clerk’s recounting of the conversation is quite different than Oprah’s. She never said anything about being able to afford it.
In any case, a normal person can’t afford it. The implication, had she said such a thing, would be that Oprah looked like a normal person. Only in Oprah’s mind would it be racial. Except that according to the clerk, it didn’t happen.
So, either Oprah’s own racial sensitivities are on display here, and her assumption that a Swiss being Swiss must be a racist, or else she made it up out of whole cloth.
I thought they cost all of the same. I don’t care how rich someone is, paying $38,000 for a purse is insanity.
She is promoting a movie right now.
A while ago there was another incident with another high end shop that was closed for a special function and would let her in. She complained about that as well on national Tv. What was going on with her in termsof business during that incident? What did she get out of that incident?

For most people you are right it is insane, but for people like Oprah it is just pocket change. It doesn’t mean they don’t like a deal, but they are un a different ballpark then most of us. $10 mil for a house is insane, but for Oprah it wouldn’t be good enough even for a guest house. Her main residence cost her something like $85 mil.
Can't be said enough. Anyone who would pay 38k for a purse is too stupid to have all that money.
The purse she was showing here was supposed to be the same style but less expensive, but no one has said what the price difference was. That’s a very high end shop in an area populated by the uber-rich. I doubt they have a bag in the shop under $5,000.
1. Oprah without makeup does not look like Oprah with makeup and a third of her current weight. She looks like a frumpy bag lady. 2. No one in Switzerland knows Oprah, who looked like a frumpy bag lady before the wedding. 3. Oprah has a movie about racism she’s promoting.
This had nothing to do with a purse or a racist clerk.
She was wearing a Donna Karan dress and sandals. I’ll bet it wasn’t an off the rack dress. Clerks in stores like the one involved in this situation can spot expensive clothes and accessories a mile away. I’ll bet the sandals were really really expensive as well.
Oprah admitted that if the purse was $38,000 then she wouldn’t have bought it anyway.
Oprah just wanted the clerk to climb up the ladder to that top shelf and bring it down so she could look at it and reject it making the clerk have to then climb back up to put it back.
The clerk wasn’t going to play step and fetch it for her and that’s what got Oprah bent out of shape. She made a snarky comment and then left the store.

‘To be honest, if I had known upfront what this damned bag cost, do you know what? The woman was right: I would not have bought the thing - far too expensive! Too expensive! $38,000! I would have fainted when I saw the price tag.’
She continued: ‘The saleslady said it was the Jennifer Aniston bag that was created by Tom Ford for Jennifer. The idea went through my head that I should call Jennifer or Tom - I know them both very well.
Instead I said to the saleslady: “Okay, I understand. The bag is just for Jennifer, and only she is allowed to buy it, right?
‘The woman said “no, no” and tried to explain something. But I was no longer listening. I just said: “Thank you very much, you’re probably right that I can’t afford it.”

She’s given two stories about what she was wearing. The only one you can believe at this point is the store clerk. A frumpy bag lady is still a frumpy bag lady no matter what she was wearing.
Oprah does not look like Oprah to an American when she’s three times her smallest size and is wearing no makeup. Imagine what she looks like to a Swiss sales clerk.
Oprah was looking to promote her movie about racism, so she went to a place where no one knew her and made up a story about being treated badly because she was black.
And it worked.
Well Bill Oreilly just called the clerk a moron and an idiot. Hope he’s made to eat his words!
