Black Lawmakers to Host First Hearing on the Status of Black Males

The hearing will address education, unemployment incarceration and other challenges.

Young, African-American men are disproportionately more likely to be incarcerated. Their unemployment rate for June was 13 percent. A study by the Schott Foundation for Public Education found that just 52 percent graduated from high school in 2009-10.

Black lawmakers on Capitol Hill in March established the Congressional Caucus on Black Men and Boys to raise awareness about issues like these that disproportionately affect this demographic. On July 24, the group will hold its first hearing, titled "The Status of Black Males: Ensuring Our Boys Mature Into Strong Men."

The timing of the hearing, a little more than a week after the George Zimmerman verdict, is coincidental, said D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, a co-chair of the caucus, but the inaugural effort to get the nation to address the challenges facing African-American males is "right on time."

Pointing to barriers to success, such as the likelihood of being racially profiled, having little or no access to quality health care or to have suffered from gun violence, Rep. Danny Davis called for the end of these and other disparities.

"We know that our nation cannot be true to its values, indeed cannot sustain itself, divided by such persistent inequalities," said the Illinois congressman and caucus co-chair......

Plenty of black males earn extraordinary salries by competing in various athletic endeavors. While it isn’t a surefire solution to all issues, one step to strengthen black communities is for these millionaires to unite. Marry black women, become their husbands, become fathers to their children. Be a rela man, not an absentee landlord. Reduce buying expensive jewelry, cars, homes and certainly end this fascination with having multiple children with various women. Then, rebuild the inner cities with those millions of dollars. Make it safe for the next generation and the one after that. What a wonderful opportunity black males have in this nation, being instant millionaires, celebrities, worshipped by so many, just for catching a football or dribbling a basketball yet very few seem overly concerned about the areas in which they left.

The Blacks and the Jews both were enslaved, and fought hundreds of years of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice.

The Jews raised their expectations of themselves, and took responsibility for their own happiness through the pursuit of excellence because they knew nobody else would, or could right the wrongs of the past, get them where they wanted to be in life and make them happy.

The blacks just voted democrat, because they knew revenge politics, victimization and blaming others for their current situation was the best way to find happiness. How is that working?

Very few seem overly concerned about the areas in which they have left.


I think they know the sad truth...
It still would not help the situation. These people are never going to learn anything or change until they stop being coddled by the government.


It has to be sink or swim for them and it will take another two generations at least to see a change. All the public housing, welfare, and food stamp programs need to cease or they will never be motivated to pull their weight.


They need to look towards God for help not the government. A hard working honest man rarely has to seek work. It will find him, (most of the time).

I had a Black Professor (Dr.)from Africa who was appalled at the way blacks in the US squandered their opportunities. He had to work his butt off to get educated, the only other chance of “success” he had was to work the diamond mines, and smuggle something out without getting shot.
