Bloomberg's latest anti-obesity effort encourages New Yorkers to take the stairs (anti-elevator)

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has gone after supersized sodas and transfats in his quest to curb obesity in New York. Now, in his final months in office, he’s targeting elevators.

On Wednesday, Bloomberg unveiled a new initiative that would encourage office workers to take the stairs instead of the elevator and promote the idea of “active design” in new and renovated buildings in the city, including open stairwells and floor plans that would force people to walk more during the day.

“Exercise is good for you,” Bloomberg declared at a press conference announcing the new design initiative.

The plan includes the creation of the Center for Active Design, a nonprofit group partly funded by the city that would suggest design changes in New York buildings and around the world to promote more physical activity.

For existing buildings, the mayor said he would also introduce legislation that would relax city codes that usually require doors leading to stairwells to be closed or locked in case of a fire. Officials suggested building owners could install a magnet that would hold a door open but automatically close it during an emergency.

City officials want occupants to be able to use the stairs instead of an elevator if they choose—though Bloomberg, who pointedly noted that he takes the stairs when he can, insisted he wasn’t trying to force exercise on people.

It’s really unfortunate that Bloomie is so tight with the Clintons because he’d be the perfect 3rd party candidate for 2016 to split the liberal vote and give us a shot at a plurality win.

Stairs? Too easy! Make them climb ropes!

Depending on the number of floors and the business of the elevator it’s usually quicker to take the stairs for anything less than 4 or 5 floors. Seriously.

Especially in an office building or large apartment building. You’ll spend For. Ever. waiting for an elevator just to go 2 or 3 floors.

Walk up (or down). Save your time.

I lived on the 4th floor once upon a time in a large apartment building. Took the stairs every single time I wasn’t carrying something large and heavy (like more than 2 bags of groceries).

People who use ropes are wimps. Let them scale up the side of the buildings with no ropes like those rock climbers.

Speaking of Bloomberg...

He's going to be in Aurora, Colorado this Friday at noon. I got an email today from Rocky Mountain Gun Owners:

This Friday, July 19th, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, will be doing a rally in Aurora as a part of their nationwide “No More Names” gun control tour.

Join us for a peaceful “counter-rally” with other gun rights supporters across the state to tell gun-grabber Bloomberg to keep his hands off of our Constitutional rights.

Here are the details:

Gun Rights Counter-Rally Friday, July 19th 12:00 p.m. Smoky Hill Shelter Cherry Creek State Park (East Entrance) 4201 S. Parker Road Aurora, Colorado 80014

For your information, there is a $9 fee per vehicle to get into the park, so please plan accordingly. There is free parking in a commercial area directly east of the park along Parker Road, but plan on wearing comfortable shoes if you plan on walking to Smoky Hill Shelter from there.

Smoky Hill Shelter is located on the east side of the lake and south of the swim beach.

I'll be there. Still trying to find out if open carry is legal at this park, though.

So, now, how many work-related heart attacks is the city to endure, because of a madman?

“open stairwells”
Is Bloomingidiot going to force people to walk more by having them shoved over the edge of one of those?

Probably not a bad idea, there were several people that died in the world trade center towers simply because they were to damn fat to walk down the stairs (down mind you as in with gravity assist).

They ought to kick Bloomberg down several flights of stairs- starting at the top of the Empire State Building.
