They are about to go out of business with that model, guaranteed...................
CS5 Works just fine and it’s paid for. Thanks for nothing Adobe.
When my last computer died, I downloaded the free trial version of Paintshop Pro. (Photoshop clone)
Supposedly it would work for thirty days.
Two years later it’s still rocking along just fine.
Very happy with 5.5 - does all what I need.
They are going to put themselves out of business with their greed. If they want to make any money, they have to charge under $100 a year. $39 is better.
An affordable price will get them more subscribers and ultimately more money.
Adobe already has all sorts of software problems that cause Firefox and other browsers to crash.
The publications we produce require a PDF file for the output at the printers. We don't even need Adobe Acrobat to create such files, as Cute Writer works fine as a PDF print driver that generates a PDF version of any software that ordinarily outputs to a conventional printer.
So they keep coming out with new releases to keep sales pumping. And have over designed PS to most non commercial artists/user's needs. Nothing ever gets removed from features. The program is HUGE and a RAM hog as a result. And no one will spend $600 just to get the new tool that straightens horizons (etc)
Agreed, Lightroom and /or Essentials will do the trick for most hobbyists - serious photgs or otherwise.
Me? I am hanging on to CS5 until something dramatically better comes along. In the mean time, all my raw files are in DNG format which will allow me such a move from Adobe (should that be the case)
Another win for open source: I foresee large scale defection from Photoshop to the GIMP
Non-professionals, on the other hand, now have incentive to look at FOSS alternatives.
When I was forced into using digital photography, due to shoddy workmanship in the developing of camera film locally, I looked around, read all the photog mags, and all of them was screaming “YA GOTS TO GET PHOTOSHOP!”
Naturally, when any industry consumer magazines, all line up behind a product, makes me wonder about the validity of such a program. (I was in favor of PC-DOS, instead of MS-DOS).
I saw the inital cost of such a program, and decided ‘Nope!’.
I have been using IRFANVIEW, since I purchased my Kodak ‘Z’ series camera. Great program, does what I want, and costs just right for this ‘c.o.b.’ - zero!
Photoshop had become a megabyte monstrosity a while back, and now, with a bad economy, Adobe is passing all of their losses, onto you, not me.
Good luck, if you really need this product. My now officially dinosaur camera will do just fine.
Most major software companies are going this route.
Microsoft is pushing everyone “to the cloud” with their Office 365 project and remote hosting options.
It allows them to reign in piracy by restricting clients to the number of paid licenses they have. Otherwise, system administrators like me could install Windows or Office or any software on any computer without a way for them to validate the licensing. Note: this is specific to volume licensing and enterprise agreements. Home users are required to “phone home” to validate ongoing use of an OS, at least with MS.
Solution: Linux. OR you could always just look around on SourceForge for free stuff that does the same thing.
This won’t hurt the large corporations. They’ll adjust their costs to ensure no profit loss. This will hurt the home users however. I agree with another poster: why upgrade if the “outdated” version works just fine?
I’ve lived without Photoshop this long, I can live without it for a good long while later.
Perfectly happy with CS4. They can take a hike with this stupid scheme.
GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program
The only way Adobe could really pull off something like this is if it they partnered with a hardware company to make an entire computer and peripherals optimized to just this one task, with software a generation or two beyond what exists today.
The whole system would be a rental.
For serious amateur photographers and even professionals Photoshop Elements with a street price of about $100 is more than adequate. I have used the full version of Photoshop and there is very little I cannot do as well with just Photoshop Elements.
