The dawn of Software as a Subscription is now upon us. You have to pay $30 a month, or $240 a year, for the privilege of using the latest Photoshop version, called Photoshop CC. Or, if you want to use the full Adobe suite, youll pay $600 a year.

Wasn't sure about copyright issues so I posted a very small excerpt. I am interested in your reactions to this

Roger that. A 6 year old copy of Photoshop will handle all the photo editing needs of 99.9% of the market. Why upgrade to the rental version?

CS5 Works just fine and it’s paid for. Thanks for nothing Adobe.

Their own Photoshop Elements will handle the needs of 99.9% of the market...and it’s only $99 - once.

When my last computer died, I downloaded the free trial version of Paintshop Pro. (Photoshop clone)
Supposedly it would work for thirty days.
Two years later it’s still rocking along just fine.

They are going to put themselves out of business with their greed. If they want to make any money, they have to charge under $100 a year. $39 is better.
An affordable price will get them more subscribers and ultimately more money.

Adobe already has all sorts of software problems that cause Firefox and other browsers to crash.

Exactly. Adobe is stupid.
Dumb as a brick. To coin a phrase.

The nonprofit I belong to finds Creative Suite 3 does all we need. And, if we were to "lose" that software, we would NOT go to a monthly subscription. Rather, we'd continue to spend every nickel twice by migrating to some other photo editing software.
The publications we produce require a PDF file for the output at the printers. We don't even need Adobe Acrobat to create such files, as Cute Writer works fine as a PDF print driver that generates a PDF version of any software that ordinarily outputs to a conventional printer.

In their press releases to the biz news sources, they cited the fact that when a new relase comes out, there is a rush of sales and then sales drops off until a new release comes forth. So the “cloud” version of PS is to smooth out those monthly cash in-flows.
So they keep coming out with new releases to keep sales pumping. And have over designed PS to most non commercial artists/user's needs. Nothing ever gets removed from features. The program is HUGE and a RAM hog as a result. And no one will spend $600 just to get the new tool that straightens horizons (etc)
Agreed, Lightroom and /or Essentials will do the trick for most hobbyists - serious photgs or otherwise.
Me? I am hanging on to CS5 until something dramatically better comes along. In the mean time, all my raw files are in DNG format which will allow me such a move from Adobe (should that be the case)

What
I need from a photo-editing program:
- layers;
- masks;
- (warping) transform;
- non-destructive adjustment layers:
-curves
-exposure
selective color
-hue/saturation
-black & white
-photo filters
-selective color
-threshold - masks on non-destructive adjustment layers;
- healing brush;
- clone stamp;
- magic wand selection tool;
- magnetic lasso;
- dodge and burn tools;
- text;
- gaussian blur (primarily for masks);
- puppet warp (make a mesh of an area and move each point);
- large file support (equivalent to "psb");
- healing brush;
- 16-bit support;
- HDR-format (32-bit floating point) support;
- canvas re-sizing and image resizing;
Photoshop CS5.5 Extended meets my needs perfectly. (I'm not even sure I need "extended", except for the fact I will need to do some 3D object texturing soon.) I don't want to upgrade even to CS6, let alone this "creative cash cow" monstrosity.
I just hope that there is no clash of CS5.5 with an operating system upgrade, ever. It will take a while until GIMP gets the feature set I need, and then it will take time to learn GIMP in the same way I extensively know Photoshop.
I really despise Adobe management right now. What a bunch of MBA bozos.
To: llevrok
I just upgraded to CS6 earlier this year. That’s it for me. CS6 and LR are plenty capable enough for my post processing needs.
