the Michael Phelps diet

Now compare that to what Olympic gold medalist and swimming sensation Michael Phelps eats in the morning, and you might feel a little malnourished:

— three fried egg sandwiches with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions, and mayo
— one five-egg omelets
— a bowl of grits
— three slices of French toast with powdered sugar
— three chocolate chip pancakes
— two cups of coffee

Altogether, Phelps consumes 12,000 calories a day while in training. Compared to the 2,500-3,000 calories a day the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends for men depending on age and activity level, Phelps diet seems outrageous.

But it is, in fact, a completely normal diet for an Olympic athlete like Phelps, said Tanya Zuckerbrot, a nutritionist and author of “The F-Factor.”

“Look at his picture, he’s completely ripped,” Zuckerbrot told FOXNews.com. “He is clearly burning that many calories — if he wasn’t, he would look chubby.”

Zuckerbrot said Phelps probably doesn’t eat that many calories during his off-training season as his high-fat, high-carbohydrate diet would be dangerous to his health.

“It’s interesting, if he wasn’t eating that many calories, he wouldn’t be winning, because he wouldn’t have the energy,” Zuckerbrot said. “The carbs is what the body uses for energy. You have to give the body glucose to fuel it. That’s why people on the Atkins diet (an all-protein diet) can’t work-out.”

For lunch, Phelps drinks 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks, one pound of pasta with tomato sauce and two large ham and cheese sandwiches (with mayo) on white bread.

For dinner, Phelps’ meal consists of six to eight slices of pizza, another pound of pasta with tomato sauce, and 1,000 calories of energy drinks.

These meals are important, Zuckerbrot said, because the breads and pasta are made up of refined carbohydrates, which digests quickly and give him instant energy.

Kids don’t eat food they don’t like, raised 3 boys, they went hungry if they snarled their noses up at what I cooked. Did not hurt them.

I can tell you now, that I would go hungry when I was a kid rather than eat what I didn’t like. You were NEVER going to starve me into eating crap I didn’t like.

Didn’t work with Mom, and it sure wouldn’t work at school.

LOL I always had something they’d eat, they just had fewer choices as we were a single income family.

I’m not much better and I’m 65...dr can’t stand it I won’t watch my cholesterol or take his killer pills.

By all means. It has been a well-studied position.

The right to bear arms was intended to protect the three core freedoms given by God of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness (the virtuous life with God.)

I'm thinking they are at least twice as big as I got in elementary school back in the 1960s.

They hold a cup of milk. They used to look like a chopped off quart but they now have them taller and thinner which makes it easier for kids to open and hold.

That is why they went to bed a tad hungry. Pretty straight southern cooking. Only concession I truly made was the meat for the spaghetti was in a side dish to be used by those who like meat, which was all but 1. Now as adults they eat it with meat.

These are the same 3 kids who said they’d not follow in dad’s footsteps smoking as smoking stunk...all 3 smoke. 1 has an 11 year old and both him and his wife smoke in front of him.

I remember that I was forced to eat food that I did not like. My mother was a good cook, but there was some food I did not care for. For examples cooked carrots. She always put sugar in it which made it to sweet. I loved raw carrots or cooked carrot salad made with vinegar and oil. Also when she made potato salad she always added celery to it. I can’t stand the taste of celery. It took her years to realize just because she liked celery in her potato salad not everyone does. I swore that I would never force my kids to eat food they did not like and I didn’t. I did not give them anything else either in place of it.
