Seventeen years after the Paris-bound TWA Flight 800 blew up off the coast of Long Island, producers Tom Stalcup and Kristina Borjesson have released a new documentary simply titled TWA Flight 800 that has the very real potential to re-open the investigation into the planes destruction.
Kudos, in particular, to Stalcup. A Ph.D. physicist by background, he has dedicated the last 16 years of his life to exposing what is arguably the most flagrant government cover-up in American peacetime history.
Borjesson has likewise been involved from the beginning. As a producer at CBS in 1996 when TWA 800 was destroyed, she sacrificed her future at CBS to get at the truth. Together, they have produced a documentary that is compelling, convincing and, finally, deeply moving.

The producers made two strategic moves to force the media to look seriously at their conclusions. One was to rely heavily on the testimony of a half-dozen highly credible whistleblowers from within the investigation.
The second was to avoid politics. When James Sanders and I produced the video documentary Silenced on this subject 12 years ago and the book First Strike two years after that, we made the marketing mistake of identifying the logic of the cover-up.

I followed the incident closely at the time....about day 3 into the crash recovery, Clinton ordered all the principal officers involved down to Washington, for “discussions”...the complexion of the reports changed upon their return to the crash site....
Qaddaffi admitted Libyan reposnibility in 2003, probably to attempt to play nice after seeing what happened to Saddam.
I think most credible analysis puts Iran behind that attack. Obviously, a state actor taking credit for an act of terror like TWA 800 would be akin to declaring war.

TWA 800 was downed in July, 1996 during Bill Clinton's first term. This was just a few months before the election of 1996 in which he was re-elected. If this news had come out that it had been a terrorist attack during the time of his "peace dividend" when the military was being downsized, he probably would not have been re-elected. Also this news would have killed the airline industry and maybe put the brakes on the booming economy at that time.
Agree with your points. TWA 800 fell out of the sky on 7/17/1996. The Summer Olympic games in Atlanta started on 7/19/1996. I recall some thought this timing may have contributed to the coverup. And of course, TWA merged with American Airlines 5 years later.
I am trying to remember who exactly the Clinton’s sent to NY to order “pulling the plug” on the investigation. Wasn’t it Jamie Gorelick? If America’s own Angel of Death was involved...
I don t know what to believe about this but if 6 NTSB investigators on the case come forward to say it was a missile that is pretty convincing. But if it was a missile there should be radar tracks from JFK.
It’s kind of hard to believe that story along with the story about the navy holding firing exercises right under international flight paths - that was the second story. People are supposed to believe that the hundreds of sailors involved in a shoot not one came forward to some sleaze press for money to tell? And a missile “accidentally” fired from a base in NJ streaks across NYC to over LI and brings down a plane? Just too many “theories” out there. Which one do you pick? I go along with a cracked fuel tank that spewed a stream of jet fuel and was ignited by the engine heat burning from the end and running up to the tank exploding it. Same thing happened in the Philippines to a 737 just sitting on the ramp in Manila. Tank ruptured due to over pressure, squirted out some fuel and ignited.
Someone even had video of it. I remember quite clearly seeing it on the local news on the day it happened. Then, it was gone and everyone pretended it never existed.
I remember the FReeper know it alls saying that this had to, had to be a center fuel tank explosion because Tin Foil hatter!

Yep! And I remember some rude comments about "World Nut Daily" which was one of the few sites taking the lead and standing firm on their reporting of the TWA Flight 800 story.
Gadaffi and his Libyans claimed no responsibility relative to Pan Am 103 for years after that attack.

You're the pilot, but the thought of jet fuel burning and advancing outside the fuselage at 250 mph at over 13K feet is difficult to picture.
Sitting stationary on the ground is much easier to envision.
I was at the premier screening of Jack Cashill’s movie “Silenced” back in the day. Still have the autographed VHS tape I got there; just saw it last week.
