Passenger tries to open emergency exit door on Alaska Airlines flight

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) - An Arizona man on an Alaska Airlines flight from Anchorage to Portland tried to open the emergency row exit door as the plane descended into Portland, officials said.

The attempt happened on Flight 132 around the 10,000-feet level Monday morning, said Annie Linstrom, a spokeswoman for the Portland International Airport.

The flight crew and some fellow passengers restrained 23-year-old Alexander Herrera until the plane landed.

Port of Portland police then boarded the plane, which originated in Anchorage, AK, to take him into custody.

Passengers told police Herrera made unusual statements before trying to open the door, but the FBI did not elaborate on what was said.

There were no injuries to any of the passengers on the flight.

The emergency exits have lock mechanisms to prevent passengers from opening them without approval from the flight crew so there was no danger to anyone on board, Port of Portland police said.

Herrera is being booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center. He'll likely make his first court appearance Tuesday before a federal magistrate

Take him up on another plane, and let him jump.

More accurately, the differential air pressure between the cabin and the exterior prevents the door from opening, whether crew approves or not. Unless they depressurize the cabin.

There are probably many terrorists in our country right now masquerading as Hispanics. I would imagine they go to Mexico, where it’s much easier to blend in with the dark hair, eyes, and olive skin. They steal an identity and become part of the underground network sneaking into the U.S. and, once here, they are protected by political correctness... until the day they get the word to attack us.

It’s a cultural thing. Being Mexican, Alexander thought that the outhouse was, well... outside!

That would do it for me. I once had to drive through there twice in two days. I’d help him open the door if I was threatened with landing in Cleveland!

One time my husband and I were on a plane going from Dallas to Houston. We got up in the air and in a short while, my husband said we weren't going to Houston, the plane was turning. About that time, the pilot came on and said we were going back to Dallas as a door was open. I believe it was the door the people used to load the galley of drinks/foods, etc. Whatever door it was, it couldn't be closed from the inside, we had to land for it to be closed.

My niece, who is a new flight attendant, says there is an electrical door lock on the plane type she flies (don’t remember what kind, off hand). It is fail safe, in that if power fails in an emergency, the door unlocks automatically.
