OWA CITY, Iowa – When it came time to draw up a budget, one of Iowa's regional Girl Scout councils reviewed its programs and made a proposal that would have been unthinkable a generation ago: selling its last four summer camps.
Troop leader Joni Kinsey was stunned. For decades, the camps had been cherished places where thousands of young girls spent summer breaks hiking, huddling around campfires and building friendships. Kinsey, whose daughter learns to train horses at camp, immediately started a petition to fight the idea.
Other scouting alums and volunteers have taken up the cause, too, packing public meetings, sending letters to newspapers and recording a protest song for YouTube. When those efforts failed, they filed a lawsuit.
Nationwide, Girl Scout councils are confronting intense opposition as they sell camps that date back to the 1950s and earlier. Leaders say the properties have become a financial drain at a time when girls are less interested in camp. Defenders insist the camping experience shaped who they are and must be preserved for future generations.

Parents have to take some responsibility for what Scouts have become...over several decades.
Oh yeah, mall lockins are nights when hundreds of pre teen girls spend the night roaming around 30 different stations in the Mall, supervised by adults and teenage girls, learning to do things like tie knots and make crafts climb rock walls and dance and just hanging out and goofing with their buddies

Which is why our daughter did not become a girl scout, however because we could still trust the BSA, three of our sons became Eagles.
When the only thing the girl scouts are known for is selling expensive cookies, then hellooo, there's a problem. The cookie sales left a bad taste in my mouth 30-40 years ago but I tried to set it aside when mine were old enough to join. They lasted about 2-3 months and were begging to drop out. We went the 4-H route where you can still run the clubs as you wish.
The Girl Scouts opened its arms to lesbians and Planned Parenthood, which is why some parents choose band and sports instead and why we’re in American Heritage Girls.
Myguess is that when they started supporting abortions, they lost their supporters.

They can hold their annual jamborees at Planned Parenthood abattoirs. Beyond that, why would they need campsites?

Really? The Methodists here in CA are all Open Hearts Open Minds and embrace the homo agenda.
Summer camps in general are suffering greatly from the trend to year-round schooling, on top of the lazy, spoiled, pussified culture of modern childhood. Kids are just not interested in outdoor pursuits these days of television, computers, and video games..
Many of the Mom’s know. My wife brought it up with some friends once, and they said they were glad the Girl Scouts supported PP.
So my daughter will never be a Girl Scout. That is ok, she wants to hunt deer.
In any non profit, the people on the ground level don’t make policy. The MBA’s brought in to “manage” the non profit do.
A friend of mine worked at a Lutheran camp that went non religious so the local cults could have someplace to dance naked around the fire. No joke
