OWA CITY, Iowa – When it came time to draw up a budget, one of Iowa's regional Girl Scout councils reviewed its programs and made a proposal that would have been unthinkable a generation ago: selling its last four summer camps.
Troop leader Joni Kinsey was stunned. For decades, the camps had been cherished places where thousands of young girls spent summer breaks hiking, huddling around campfires and building friendships. Kinsey, whose daughter learns to train horses at camp, immediately started a petition to fight the idea.
Other scouting alums and volunteers have taken up the cause, too, packing public meetings, sending letters to newspapers and recording a protest song for YouTube. When those efforts failed, they filed a lawsuit.
Nationwide, Girl Scout councils are confronting intense opposition as they sell camps that date back to the 1950s and earlier. Leaders say the properties have become a financial drain at a time when girls are less interested in camp. Defenders insist the camping experience shaped who they are and must be preserved for future generations.

Well, what did they expect? They turned their back on their traditions years ago. Why should people think of the Girls Scouts as being anything special if they're just like every other youth club? Hell, take away the cookies and they're just a glorified YMCA.
The same will now happen to the Boy Scouts. In fact, I believe it will happen to them even faster. Why should people allow them to influence their children if they disagree with their core position?
Both Scouts were organizations that were based on timeless Christian values. Now they have decided money is more important than principles and tradition. And the safety of the children's souls, for that matter.
Now they are both just secular kids group. What's the point? There is no longer anything special about either of them.

it is becoming safer to keep scouts away from camps now. girlscouts went full bore open lesbo awhile ago.
Yep, why need a camp to teach to ward off dangerous animals and disease in the woods when you just can embrace it amongst ourselves in bedrooms. Besides, it’s less work and more money for organizers and corrupt “trustees”.
GS went south a long time ago, partnering with Planned Parenthood and accepting all sorts of immoral crap
And they can stuff their government cookies crap too. This girlscout cookie is so unhealthy in the ingredients. Typical Michelle O craving, though.

but factually a lot of the camps have been so neglected the costs to rehab them are now very high
of course as the camps deteriorated less troops wanted to or were able to use them, so catch-22
it is unfortunate for the people and families who donated this land to GS to see it so mismanaged, neglected and finally sold off for developers. But then an awful lot of the paid staff now running GS Councils have never even been GS in troops, or troop leaders, and thus have no memory of troop camping to even be aware of what they are losing
Most of them seem to see GS an an equal opportunity wymyns rights organization to train future CEO’s, not a girl led program that teaches leadership self sufficiency emergency preparedness and respect for nature by spending time outdoors in girl-led skill's and decision-making activities
Once the camps are gone so is GS for all intents and purposes
GS will be an after school activity with a paper membership roster, to show “diversity”, to justify the professional adult staff continuing to fundraise and beg for corporate grants and donations

they allow openlesbians as leaders and scouts they allow boys who think they are girls to join. they partner with planed parenthood. not my definition of a safe place to putyou Godly Christian daughter for a few weeks.
I imagine they're more interested in having sleepovers at the mall.
well you can always send her to YMCA camp
or out to a church camp, since the Episcopalians and Methodists and Presbys among other always screen their youth leaders and counselors for lesbianism and pedophilia
or maybe just send her to a summer sports camp or join a traveling sporta team- no lesbianism or pedo’s there to tempt your Godly Christian daughter, friend

btw, factually speaking, 2 yrs ago one Council forced one troop leader to allow one screwed up 6 yr old boy to register as a GS
LOL! Mall sleepovers (actually up all night, no one sleeps) have become big events in the wintertime!
