First milk, butter, coffee and cornmeal ran short. Now Venezuela is running out of the most basic of necessities – toilet paper.
Blaming political opponents for the shortfall, as it does for other shortages, the government says it will import 50m rolls to boost supplies.
One supermarket visited by the Associated Press in the capital on Wednesday was out of toilet paper. Another had just received a fresh batch, and it quickly filled up with shoppers as the word spread.
"I've been looking for it for two weeks," said Cristina Ramos. "I was told that they had some here and now I'm in line."
Economists say Venezuela's shortages stem from price controls meant to make basic goods available to the poorest parts of society and the government's controls on foreign currency.
"State-controlled prices – prices that are set below market-clearing price – always result in shortages. The shortage problem will only get worse, as it did over the years in the Soviet Union," said Steve Hanke, professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University.
President Nicolás Maduro, who was selected by the dying Hugo Chávez to carry on his "Bolivarian revolution", claims that anti-government forces, including the private sector, are causing the shortages in an effort to destabilise the country.

Shortage of toilet paper in Venezuela. They need to buy adult potty wipes to use like I ordered to substitute for toilet paper.

For several years I visited a company that made the elastic bands that make diapers leak proof. They being exported to an American company with a diaper plant in Venezuela. I wonder if they closed it.

I was in college when the Toilet Paper Shortage of 1973 hit.
Unbelievable that you couldn’t find TP, and any shipment that came in was quickly bought up by hoarders.Johnny Carson started the rumor...which was false until it became true :)
Maybe that’s why I always keep an extra case of TP on hand, LOL, don’t want to relive the days of having to improvise.
If they would do like the US, and kill off some of their population and replace them with Muslims, there would be no need for so much toilet paper.

This move will keep the regime afloat for about another week.
Just a few days ago, we had a prepper thread mainly about toilet paper. JRandomFreeper is going to use the Roman method, a sponge on a stick, wash it off with bleach water for the next time.
I ordered gobs of adult potty wipes from Walmart. Doesn't take much room to store and not expensive to have a year's worth. I don't have a huge amount of space to store toilet paper.
Just run the garden hose in to the bathroom and put a spray nozzle on it. Redneck Sitz Bath.
Shortages, rationing, poor quality all are hallmarks of a communist government yet so many in the USA are pushing us in that direction.
Seems we need some serious cleaning of the gene pool.
