~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada

Nellis Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base, in Clark County, Nevada, on the northeast side of Las Vegas. An installation of the Air Combat Command (ACC), Nellis is the location of United States Air Force Warfare Center and a major training location for both U.S. and foreign fighter aircraft aircrews.

The base is named for William Harrell Nellis, a Las Vegas resident and Air Force P-47 pilot who died in action during the Battle of the Bulge.

Nellis, an integral part of the United States Air Force’s Air Combat Command, is known as the “Home of the Fighter Pilot.” It is the pinnacle of advanced air combat aviation training.

The base’s all-encompassing mission is accomplished through an array of aircraft: A-10; F-15C; F-15E; F-22A; F-16; RQ-1A and MQ-1 Predator remotely piloted aircraft; and HH-60G helicopters. Nellis’ work force of approximately 12,000 military and civilian people makes it one of the largest single employers in southern Nevada.

Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., is one of the largest fighter bases in the world. Aircraft from Nellis operate on the Nevada Test and Training Range, which offers more than 15,000 square miles of airspace and 4,700 square miles of restricted land.

More than 75 percent of all live munitions used by the Air Force for training are dropped on the Nevada Test and Training Range. Many communities in southern Nevada see and hear Nellis aircraft 24 hours a day, seven days a week. From 100 feet above the ground to twice the speed of sound, Nellis conducts advanced combat training, performs operational test and evaluation, and develops tactics.

The U.S. Air Force Demonstration Team, The Thunderbirds, is located at Nellis Air Force Base.

The 3600th Air Demonstration Team was declared operational on June 1, 1953, although the team itself had been together and practicing for about 6 weeks prior. At this time the team had no name. There already were the Sky-Blazers, Blue Angels, Acrojets, and now the 3600th Air Demonstration Team? This just wouldn't do. During June 1953, a contest was held at Luke AFB, home of the 3600th, to pick a name for the new team. The name chosen was "Thunderbirds".

I’m headed to my psychiatrist tomorrow morning. I’m finally working with them to deal with my PTSD.

The last time I watched the William Tell Gunnery competition at Tyindall afb (on TV), It was won by Nellis I think tho it could have been Hollonman.

Eglin had been winning it every time but this time they had a missle which wouldn’t growl and he could not shoot. when they got the plane on the ground they could find nothing wrong with it so Eglin lost for the first time in a long time.

I think there is a triangle of the best combat bases with Holloman, Nellis and Eglin being those bases. Those pilots from those bases consider the First Fighter Wing from Langley as the “worst fighter wing”

I do know that in the Iraq war the Eglin squadron made nearly all the air to air kills.

Good evening!

Nellis, my home base between Dec 1995 and Dec 1998. Great place to be stationed, and where I met my lovely wife.
