Kissinger to Hillary: Secretaries of State Become Presidents

Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger made light of the possible presidential bid of another ex-secretary — Hillary Clinton – while presenting her an award at a Washington, D.C., dinner Wednesday.

First, he joked about his own presidential aspirations. "At least four secretaries of state became president," Kissinger said, according to news reports.

"And that sort of started focusing my mind even though there was a constitutional provision that prevented me from doing it. I thought up all kinds of schemes to get around that." Kissinger was ineligible to be president because he was born in Germany.

I don’t believe any of the former SOS were communists as Hillary is. I bet he didn’t mention that.

The fact that he consistently worked against American interests probably would have made him more likely to become President.

“And that sort of started focusing my mind even though there was a constitutional provision that prevented me from doing it. I thought up all kinds of schemes to get around that.”

Wonderful. Even if tongue in cheek to some extent, this underscores the fact that what motivates most in public office is narcissism. It's all about them.

Huh?? Going back the last 50 years...who, for example? Or did I do take a long nap and miss the administrations of Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, Madeleine Albright, Warren Christopher, James Baker, et al?

“The fact that he consistently worked against American interests probably would have made him more likely to become President.”

If by “he” you mean Henry Kissinger, I don’t think he worked against American interests, I think he just didn’t represent them well. For example, in “You can negotiate anything” Herb Cohen stated that Kissinger commuted to the Paris peace negotiations and the American team stayed in hotels. The North Vietnamese team bought a villa. The mental difference in psychological investment in the outcome was made obvious by this one aspect. (There were many more aspects where Kissinger was out maneuvered.)

If you expect to win a negotiation, you must commit to the time required. If an American goes to Japan to negotiate, he’ll be met. The first question is, “how long are you staying?” No serious negotiating takes place until you are going to be late for your flight if you don’t leave NOW.

Kissinger enjoyed the power and limelight at the expense of performing well in his job. I think he was generally competent. But a man quoted as saying, “Power is the greatest aphrodisiac” can’t be working just for America.

I believe Hillary is infinitely less competent and even more driven by the need for power.

Go away, Kissinger. You never should have been SoS, either!

Though Jews have guided this country to greatness since the days of Haym Solomon (in case you don’t know who that is look him up - fascinating...)

The way things are going we will elect a Muslim, homosexual black man from Africa or something before we’ll ever elect a Jew.

"But about the extraordinary generation of those leaders who were not just present at the creation but leading the creation of a liberal global order that provided unprecedented peace and prosperity along with progress on behalf of the values that we hold in common." (My emphasis)

Well now, HRC has taught me what all my years of formal and self education never did, which is, this nation was founded as a liberal global order and that she and Obama are continuing the tradition. However, I can not help but wonder how she can equate the supposed "unprecedented peace and prosperity" of this "liberal global order" with the Middle East and parts of Africa in flames. powder kegs with lit fuses in Asia, massive unemployment and poverty causing unprecedented numbers in the multi-millions to be fed by government "soup kitchens" (food stamps)that are the results of policies carried out by her and the rest of this "liberal global order" in Washington DC.

I guess Obama is smarter than Kissinger. He had no problem getting around rules that kept him from being president.

As for Hillary as president, maybe she is having trouble with her brain. She can be the first brain damaged female President.

A Jew must be next, because we already got the first two in 0scumbag.

The “or something” part worries me, though.

Oddly I do not remember this particular example but Cohen (speaking of Jews) was making a deeper point throughout that book (and others) regarding time. The reason knowledge comes before time in his "list" knowlwdge, options, intimacy, time is so that you can control time vis a vis your adversary.

At the same time, NOT appearing to care to invest sufficiant time allows you to have the upper hand in options - or to appear to. In his words - "I care, but not THAT much."

Herb Cohen is extremely astute politically as well. He is quite simply a genius, and has just about the keenest sense of history around. He would know, I think, that the North Vietnamese had no 'moral bottom line,' and could fundamentally not be trusted.

Therefore I cannot imagine him advocating a greater "perceived investment" on Kissinger's behalf:

I am almost certain both Cohen and Kissenger would see that as a move that could make the North Vietnamese perceive us as weak.

Actually it was six, the last being James Buchanan.
