In the current debate over revamping the nation's immigration laws, there may be no elected official with more on the line than Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.
Rubio, a Republican and Cuban-American from Miami, was elected to the Senate with strong support from the Tea Party and other conservatives. Rubio's challenge is to convince conservative skeptics that by supporting an immigration overhaul, he hasn't betrayed them.
Among other things, the Senate immigration bill tightens security on the borders and creates a pathway for immigrants who came to the country illegally to become citizens. Eight senators four Democrats and four Republicans helped write it. But since its introduction, Rubio is about the only one you see.
U.S. With Or Without Reform, Immigration Lawyers In Short Supply He has appeared on more than a dozen radio talk shows, targeting his pitch to the conservative Republicans who are some of the bill's most outspoken opponents.
When he appeared on talk radio's Laura Ingraham Show, the host asked: "Isn't it reasonable for these conservatives to assume that you've been duped here?"
"No, it isn't," Rubio responded, "because the fact of the matter is that this bill reflects principles that I issued back in January on immigration reform that were different from the principles the president had laid out. In essence, they've come to our position. We haven't gone to theirs."
One of the main concerns of radio talk show hosts, Tea Party activists and conservative bloggers is that Rubio and other Republicans are giving away too much on an issue they believe mostly helps Democrats.
After having Rubio on his show, conservative talk host Rush Limbaugh warned of the consequences. "There's no doubt there's a correlation: '86 amnesty and the Republican Party lost California," he said.
Limbaugh was talking about the 1986 immigration overhaul bill supported by Republicans, including President Ronald Reagan, that granted amnesty to nearly 3 million immigrants who had come to the United States illegally. Limbaugh and other conservatives say that amnesty helped spur more illegal immigration and created new Latino voters who helped put California in the Democratic column.
"There are legitimate fears that the same thing is going to happen to the country that Republicans, conservatives, are going to end up just being outnumbered," Limbaugh said.
Rubio's office has dismissed fears that immigration reform will create a bonanza of new Democrats. Not all of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants will become citizens, they say, and an even smaller percentage will vote. And many Republicans say the right candidate with a history of doing well with Hispanics like Rubio or former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, for example could do a lot to turn it around.
But for Rubio and other Republicans pushing the immigration bill, the conservative backlash is the immediate problem, and they are doing what they can to tamp it down. Americans for a Conservative Direction is running ads in Florida, North Carolina, Texas and three other states.
YouTube One ad features footage of Rubio saying: "What we have in place today is de facto amnesty." A narrator adds: "Conservative leaders have a plan the toughest enforcement measure in the history of the United States."
While the pushback from the right against immigration reform is worrying to some Republicans, it's not likely to derail the bill. Some of the best-funded conservative organizations like Americans for Prosperity, the Club for Growth and FreedomWorks are staying out of the fight. And in the grass roots, Tea Party groups are split over the issue.
Within the Republican Party, there are many like Miami Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart who says the push for an immigration overhaul just recognizes reality.
"I wish we didn't have a Democratically controlled Senate and a Democratic president. But that's the reality," Diaz-Balart says. "So if we're going to pass legislation to deal with these issues that everybody understands have to be fixed, it's going to have to be a bipartisan bill."
Earlier this month, a group of Tea Party supporters held a protest at Rubio's office in Palm Beach County to express their displeasure with his support for the bill. It was a potentially worrying incident for Rubio.
But one of the demonstration's leaders, Jim McGovern, says while they may disagree over this issue, he still likes Rubio.
"Short of his committing a mortal sin or something like that, in my eyes, I'm still going to be a Rubio supporter," McGovern says.
On the radio talk shows, Rubio has had to answer some tough questions but has been mostly treated well. In the meantime, Rubio is being praised for his leadership and political courage qualities that could be important in any future runs, including for president.
The bill is amnesty for 11+ million Mexicans.
The Dems want it because they know it will give them 11+ million new voters on the welfare ticket that will put them in power for the rest of eternity.
Marco Rubio wants it because he thinks it will give him 11+ million new voters on the "Your skin color looks like my skin color" ticket and that will put him in power for the rest of his life.
Marco saw that skin color politics worked like magic for Obama, who is the lamest excuse for a black man I have ever seen. He is betting he can do the same. What he is forgetting is those same blacks that voted for Obama would never vote for Allen West. Why? Because WELFARE > skin color.
When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic. -Benjamin Franklin
That needs to be repeated!
What is a Rubio?
Marco Dupio?
“”Short of his committing a mortal sin or something like that, in my eyes, I’m still going to be a Rubio supporter,” McGovern says. “
There seems to be a lot of that going around lately...INSANE! These men are POLITICIANS! They’ve done NOTHING to earn this kind of blind loyalty.
“A narrator adds: “Conservative leaders have a plan the toughest enforcement measure in the history of the United States.” “
THESE are the kind of lies Rubio is spreading.....’Good conservative’ my butt.

What a nerve for these little known groups to be running ads and speaking for conservatives. They DON'T speak for me, no way, no how.
And "The Tea Party groups are split over the issue".....show me the source for this statement thrown out as fact. Two people interviewed doesn't make a poll. And how does an amorphous entity like the Tea Party get polled, anyhow!
Led by Rubio it appears that many faux conservatives and faux conservative groups are being set in motion to get a bill rammed through that will destroy the Republican party for the unforeseeable future, make it impossible to find well-paying employment, and skyrocket welfare and other entitlement payouts to impossible proportions.
Yep, we're being destroyed from within, alright....even from within so-called "conservative" groups who look on Rubio as an idol and are rallying around him to protect and promote him like he is the Simon Bolivar of North America.

I get tired of all the blather the politicians spew out - when the solution is clear:
1) SECURE THE BORDER
2) Announce that all illegal aliens must regester with immigration by a date less than 3 months hence.
3) In that announcement declare that after the set date, any illegal apprehended for ANY reason, without proof of registration, will be deported immediately - no family good-byes, no stopping by the house for another pair of shoes - IMMEDIATELY!
4) The registration process will determine if the illegal wishes to become a citizen or not.
5) If the illegal wishes to become a citizen, they are sent home (home country) to get in line with everybody else making application for citizenship.
6) If they do not wish to become a citizen, they set a date on which they will return home (home country) to allow us to run a background check and vet their re-entry. If they have been on the public dole during their illegal stay in our country, they will be DENIED!
7) After the return/re-entry date (#6 above) the rules of #3 will apply. If they have not gone through the process and are found in our country BY ANY MEANS, they will be immediately deported.
8) If a non-citizen attempts to register to vote, or votes, they will be deported IMMEDIATELY!
9) If a person is deported for violation of #2, #6 or #8, they will NEVER be allowed entry into the US for ANY reason. If their baby girl is dying of kidney failure and the only viable match is the deported illegal - the family better fly the girl to where the donor is, because the donor AIN’T GETTING BACK IN!
10) If a person is denied re-entry for being on the dole, they can re-apply in 5 years, and may be granted re-entry if they have been gainfully employed for that 5 years, AND only if NO family member (G-parents, parents, aunts, uncles, spouses, children, cousins, nieces, nephews) has been on the dole in the US for the last 3 years.
It starts with securing the border. Enforcement of deportation and re-entry rules, without sympathy or remorse, is absolutely key.

To be Clear About Mark Zuckerbergs Americans for a Conservative Direction
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | April 24th, 2013 at 11:35
I just want to be clear about about the new front group for the Gang of Eights immigration proposal on the right, Americans for a Conservative Direction.
The group, funded by Facebook billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, is perfectly entitled to set up this group. A good bit of the center-right coalition supports the issue.[snip]
I QUIT facebook over Zuckerberg coming out for amnesty....I should have known Norquist/Conda were behind it.
So the Marxists at NPR like Rubio, hmmm.
Ruck Fubio!
There's no Tea Party split that I'm aware of. Everyone in my circles despises this bill. Yet the media keeps insisting that Senor Rubio remains a 'Tea Party favorite'.
For two days running I have received fundraising solicitations from Rubio. I donated quite a lot to his run against Crist and was glad to do it. Now, I’m glad he includes postage-paid envelopes with his solicitations so that I can economically tell him what a low, belly-dragging, snake in the grass he has turned out to be.
Ironically, today’s solicitation came in an envelope marked in huge black letters “DO NOT DESTROY”. If only the country was so marked.
