Boat Where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Hid 'Looked Like Swiss Cheese' After Shootout

Boat Where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Hid 'Looked Like Swiss Cheese' After Shootout Tsarnaev was found when Watertown man looked underneath tarpaulin and found the Boston bombing suspect inside

Adam Gabbatt 20 April 2013 The boat that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found hiding in looked like "Swiss cheese" after the Boston bombing suspect's shootout with police, the boat's owner told neighbours.

Tsarnaev was taken into custody after a Watertown resident, named locally as David Henneberry, went to check on his boat and found Tsarnaev inside. Swat teams moved in and a gun fight ensued, resulting in Tsarnaev being captured. He is in hospital in a serious condition.

On Saturday, Henneberry was being hailed as the man who helped end a tense 22-hour manhunt, which, until his phone call to police, had been fruitless.

But it came at a cost. The boat – a source of immense pride for the owner, according to local residents – was no longer seaworthy, being, as it was, riddled with bullet holes.

"He said the boat was like Swiss cheese," said one neighbour, who did not want to give her name but lived a few doors down from the boat owner.

The resident said she had spoken to Henneberry on Friday night, after police had taken away the suspect.

SWAT with rifles and shotguns with vision equipment and scopes within 25 yards firing many rounds and they could not hit this guy? No wonder a call went out to the perimeter cops to not fire their weapons.

Meanwhile the witness who called the cops is left with a boat with holes and probably will not even get to scrounge up the brass.

Heavey said she had ventured out briefly into her backyard on Friday afternoon, breaching the lockdown order to take her dog out for a walk. "The kid could probably hear us in our backyard from where he was," she said

Heavey sounds like a typical Boston liberal who believes the media.

The media kept showing the picture of a Dzhokhar when he was a "kid". Heavey responds by calling the 19 year old terrorist Dzhokhar, a "kid".

Here's a more recent photo.

Bigger story to me is that, as soon as the public is brought into the picture, the dirtbags are caught.

Um, The public did not call in the whereabouts of the brothers. The brothers panicked. They got mixed in with a robbery at a 7-11 convenient store. They made the mistake of attracting a lot of attention by killing the MIT cop. They then carjacked a motorist who managed to escape. He told a gas station operator to call in that these were the terrorists by their own admission. That's when the chase to Watertown started.

If the brothers had kept their cool, stayed out of stores getting robbed, and kept their mouths shut, and did not do reckless acts, they may still be at large.

Yes, the younger brother got caught when the ban on free movement was lifted allowing a homeowner to make the accidental discovery of the fugitive. That ban was stupid. One can only imagine the economic loss at a time when government was expending at an overtime rate. They could just as well have locked down east Watertown and spared Boston, Cambridge, Waltham, Newton, and Belmont the use of brute repression. They had a gut feeling and reasons to believe he was hiding somewhere in east Watertown. In fact he was.

They may not be able to hit the broad side of a barn with 200 rounds, but shoot a boat? Yes we can!

Obviously, none of them were former Navy SEALs.

I have the same question. This overwhelming force is so comforting. /s

I'm about a mile away. I heard about 30 to 50 rounds of semi-automatic fire lasting about 10 to 20 seconds. No automatics. No shotguns.

Any policeman/top brass who suggests using blanks to draw this punk’s fire should be instantly sacked from the force and decertified forever. The tactic is incredibly stupid and dangerous, and not just for the cops. Rounds could have hit people blocks away.

those who shot up his boat should be the ones pooling their money together to buy him a new one.

What? You act as though the cops were some kind of vandals. They were trying to take down a murdering terrorist, my friend.

Unfortunately the boat sustained collateral damage in that effort, but I assure you, the boat owner fully understands that. The cops may have saved this man's life by sacrificing his boat.

Don't forget, they risked their lives to get this guy.

Yes, insurance policies can have exclusions for terrorism, however this may not meet the definition of a terrorist act. Government insurrection maybe. There was a bit of overkill by the local shoot em up take no prisoners police, but there is a fund to pay for these things by most municipalities. The kid did not do the damage. There even seems to be evidence he couldn’t even move when the gun battle began, and didn’t return fire. Generally terrorism must be conducted by a foreign entity as well. Otherwise its riot, civil commotion, vandalism, etc.

This may be the first time a boat on land was shot that many times.

Roger that. Even the report of his brother’s body had too many bullet holes to count. I saw the un-blurred picture of his body and could only see two definative holes. Now he had a huge trauma gash on the left side of his chest and a large trauma discoloration of his face below the eyes, down to his throat and onto the right shoulder (giant bruise).

This matched the description of what I would expect from the interview the Watertown Chief gave to Wolf Blitzed (purposeful) yesterday around 11 am. He said the older brother came at them walking and shooting. When he ran out of ammo, a cop tackled him and they were in the process of cuffing him and getting him back up (yes he was still able to walk) when here comes the SUV, the cops scattered and bro’ was run over and was dragged along the street for a “short” distance.

So, who wants to take bets when the owner files a reimbursement claim to the cops, they tell him tough crap and threaten him with “harboring a fugitive” if he makes a stink...

Yes, if I owned the boat I wouldn't be pounding the table for repayment, just yet. Eventually, yes (It's a $50K boat, according to this story). As someone pointed out, I could get a fortune for it if I could sell it on Ebay. But I can imagine Ebay refusing to allow it.

Why in the world should we do that? He can file on his insurance, file a claim to the police, the city, etc. Why should we?

There are still the options of filing a claim with the city, the police, etc. Also, there is the last ditch “casualty loss” deduction (everything over 7.5% of AGI or something). Also, there may be a clause in his homeowner’s insurance that will cover it.

I didn’t say you had to contribute.

I don’t profess to know the owner’s circumstances. Does he have insurance? If so, would insurance cover something like this? Maybe not.
And if I was a resident of Boston or the surrounding area, I might not appreciate having my tax dollars pay for a new boat.

I also suspect that the people responsible for this effort feel a bit of gratitude to this guy for his part in finding and apprehending the terrorist.
