The Republican plan to block debate on Senate Bill 649, which requires background checks on almost all gun purchases and transfers, failed spectacularly Thursday morning when sixteen Republican Senators joined almost all of the Democrats to vote in favor opening debate on the bill. Among those voting to defeat the filibuster were 9 Democrats with A ratings from the National Rifle Association, and 12 A-rated Republicans (out of 16 Republican ayes). Two Democrats, Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) and Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK), joined the majority of Republican Senators who tried to prevent debate, much less a vote, on the bill.
The plan to filibuster the gun reform measure was met with vocal resistance from some Republicans who, even if they disagree with the policy, felt it deserved debate and a straight up-or-down vote. Going into the vote, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he felt confident he had the 60 votes required to overcome a filibuster, but he wasnt certain. As it turned out, it wasnt even close. The effect of the Newtown parents lobbying efforts this week cannot be underestimated, and todays vote could be a good omen for gun reform.
The Republicans who voted to debate the bill were Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN, NRA rating=A), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH, NRA rating=A), Richard Burr (R-NC, NRA rating=A), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA, NRA rating=A), Tom Coburn (R-OK, NRA rating=A), Susan Collins (R-ME, NRA rating=C+), Bob Corker (R-TN, NRA rating=A), Jeff Flake (R-AZ, NRA rating=A), Lindsey Graham (R-SC, NRA rating=A), Dean Heller (R-NV, NRA rating=A), John Hoeven (R-ND, NRA rating=A), Johnny Isakson (R-GA, NRA rating=A), Mark Kirk (R-IL, NRA rating=F), John McCain (R-AZ, NRA rating=B+), Pat Toomey (R-PA, NRA rating=A) and Roger Wicker (R-MS, NRA rating=A+).

Is there another vote to end debate on this POS legislation? So these 21 a$$hoes have to vote again on this?
Not sure if there’s a vote to end debate but they will vote on the bill itself. I don’t trust a single one of them to do the right thing. They’re scum.
In 2009 and 2010, the Taxed Enough Already Party made good progress by rallying under the Gadsden Flag. I have been flying mine 24/7 since 1-20-2013.
Looks like I ‘ll be flying The Minuteman Flag underneath it from now to 11-2014.
Sadly, it appears the Taxed Enough Already Party has gone missing.
Tea Party groups must unite. Conservative radio talkers can help us since we see many networks are the arm of the democratic party. The next primary should be a political blood bath. We need to do whatever it takes, to get rid of these people. Anyone out there who has a good background and you respect the constitution, begin a campaign, or if you know of a solid leader, encourage them to run. We have to get rid of these current turncoats because they are the problem. The speaker is our enemy; just no other way to say it because he’s not trustworthy.

You’ll have your hands full, SC voters are so uninformed that they think Graham and McPain are “conservatives”. They will nevcer figure it out.
The poor Republican lawmaker selection is the result of uninformed, even grossly ignorant, Republican primary voters, which some “independents” sprinkled in too.

I would like to know what actions the NRA is taking. We hear almost nothing from them.
Did they challenge these senators? Did they warn them that the NRA will not support their campaigns and actively support their opponents?
Do they realize they can lose that surge in membership (and then some) if they do not stand up and support their membership’s interests?
What action has the NRA taken against the laws passed in NY, Conneticut, and Colorado? What support have they solicited from their supporters and politicians?
What have they done to encourage manufacturers to move out of these states?
HAVE THEY DONE ANYTHING?
Like college faculty, the NRA has been “inflating grades” for years. It’s the failure of hope over reality.
“What will the NRA rate the sorry 21 after this vote?”
That’s what we have to watch. I just do not trust some of the NRA board members, like Grover Norquist. We’ve lost nearly all our ‘conservative’ groups to the dark side. I hope the NRA doesn’t follow suit.
The Tea Party is now a victims association.
Whine whine whine 24/7.
Does a bear... I’d include a graphic representation for clarity but HTML is not my forte.
but how many talk radio pundits actually really get involved and tell their listeners to make calls etc?
Not many because most care about their own pockets and power and job.
I’ve just given up on most talk radio like Hannity, Rush , Levin and Savage are still for me as is Laura but the rest ARF
What a lovely list of BS. I assume the feds will insist that local law enforcement ENFORCE this FEDERAL mandate....you know like they insist that local law enforcement ENFORCE federal immigration law....oops! ....nevermind.
