NYC Mayor Bloomberg: Government has right to ‘infringe on your freedom’
The Washington Times ^ | March 25, 2013 | Cheryl K. Chumley

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Sunday: Sometimes government does know best. And in those cases, Americans should just cede their rights.

“I do think there are certain times we should infringe on your freedom,” Mr. Bloomberg said, during an appearance on NBC. He made the statement during discussion of his soda ban — just shot down by the courts — and insistence that his fight to control sugary drink portion sizes in the city would go forth.

I heard this and thought has he gone mad or is this what the utter elitist class think today.

Once they get rid of the religious freedom by getting rid of DOMA then they want to be looked at as Gods.
They want us to pray to them

I;ve never fell for the civil war thing before but the way this country is ging then how much can the feds and the elitist ruling class take.

Communist Europe tried this and we beat them but the communists over here never went away.
They lived and clung onto that communist dream and so they worked to now overthrow this country as Russia was gone.

Attack the 10th, the 1st religious freedom, and the 2nd and then basically evrything else falls into line with their radical left wing views and for this country to go the same way as Eastern Europe

We need to start marching on Government buildings and hanging politicians

. Tar and feathers would still work ... if LE will STAND DOWN. Along with politicians, various school teachers/administrators race baiters and especially members of the enemedia need to join the tarred and feathered on the rail out of town. The revolution will start when LE attempts to get in the way.

It's a "progressive" thing.

"If the personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution inhibit the government’s ability to govern the people, we should look to limit those guarantees.’’ Bill Clinton

"The purpose of government is to reign in the rights of the people.’’ Bill Clinton

agree, this country has gone insane and the officials think they;re God

Judges to decide on what marriage is, have they gone mad we know what it is, and having their own family there to profit from their decision is hardly fair.
Then cuts on what to drink, to smoke, what is displayed, te high taxes, occupy smellies allowed to camp.

It seems the only think the communist left and socialist NAZI’s understand is force.
Yhey are afriad of people rising up and if it takes millions of us outside the white house then so be it.

People are angry, seeing what they are seing, being told what marriage is by a few handful elitist corrupt fools, , tens of millions have voted on this issue, seeing the military be robbed, the younger generations be brainwahsed and have to pay for this spending

The comments about NYC on this forum are almost uniformly clueless - as if it were the mythical land of Mordor rather than a real place.

You think he's bad now, wait till he becomes POTUS and he will because he can outspend anybody. And being that we are currently going through a moron apocalypse in this country judging by the fact that Obama was elected twice, he probably won't have to spend much. This is why he is doing all this stuff so he can point to it when he runs for Emperor, I mean POTUS.."I got people healthy, I stopped them from smoking, I took guns off the street..blah blah.." His girl Eva Braun, I mean Christine Quinn, is all set to take over for him as Despot, I mean Mayor, then he is going to announce his candidacy as an independent.

“So favored that he won by less than 1%”

I know I ‘don’t do my homework’, but the if I were to do my homework, the interwebs say he won 50.6 to 46.0 last time.

And his re-election in 2005 was by 20%!

And the latest approval rating I can find (February) is 50%.

Now I would only know that if I ‘did my homework’.

But I guess I’ll accept your premise: Bloomberg’s two re-elections, successful modification of election law, and high approval rating are not indicative of anything. He is the least popular person in New York and nobody likes him.

And ‘give me a break’. So what if NY politics are broken, and Bloomberg has been able to ‘exploit’ this. That is the definition of ‘no pushback’...letting him roll all over people.

Do you know who is appealing the soda ban decision? The people of New York City are. Not Bloomberg personally. The City’s legal team is pursuing it. I’d say the man is in control. The accuracy of my observation is not contingent on how recently I may have visited New York (and I used to make monthly visits), it is contingent on the easily observed realities of his success. With the exception of a state court ruling against him (which the city is fighting for him), when has he not been successful? Banning trans fats? Plan B to 14 year olds? Eliminating his own term limit?

His power is fairly unchecked, at least to this distant observer who doesn’t do his homework. And BTW, it affects us in flyover country. NY is such a big market, if they ban trans fats for example, entire food chains comply - nationwide.

the interwebs say he won 50.6 to 46.0 last time

And those two figures add up to 100%, by your math?

The "anybody but Bloomberg" vote was, and remains, 49.3%.

And his re-election in 2005 was by 20%!

Underlining my point that he was a different, less drunk-with-power, individual at the end of his first term.

high approval rating

His approval rating is about 50%.

Do you know who is appealing the soda ban decision? The people of New York City are. Not Bloomberg personally. The City’s legal team is pursuing it.

And who do you think these attorneys work for? Who do you think hired them as city attorneys in the first place?

when has he not been successful? Banning trans fats? Plan B to 14 year olds? Eliminating his own term limit?

How did he accomplish each of those things? By putting them to a popular vote?

His power is fairly unchecked

The check is supposed to be the city council, but he has successfully purchased a working majority of that council.

Just because Bloomberg's opposition has been ineffective does not mean it has been nonexistent.

it affects us in flyover country

Do you blame Iowans or Ohioans or Coloradans (all residents of so-called "flyover country") for the Obama presidency? Because Obama is president and has had lots of success with his agenda, does it mean that 100% of Americans support him and no one has the guts to challenge him or speak up against him?

Does the fact that he won 51.1% of the vote (a much broader "mandate" than Bloomberg's 50.7% win) or his 50% approval rating mean that all Americans are sheep who love him and are happy to do whatever he says?

Take a step back and examine your arguments.

And now a word from C.S. Lewis:

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their consciences.”
