Billionaire Bill Gates is a vegetarian who has become a vocal advocate for a plant-based diet. Gates says a vegetarian diet is healthier and more environmentally friendly than a meat-based diet, and notes that the production of meat is responsible for over half the greenhouse gas emissions in the world.
"[Moving toward a vegetarian diet is] important too in light of the environmental impacts of large-scale meat and dairy production, with livestock estimated to produce nearly 51% of the worlds greenhouse gases," Gates blogged on Mashable March 21.
"The global population is on track to reach nine billion by 2050. What are all those people going to eat? With billions of people adding more animal protein to their diets meat consumption is expected to double by 2050 it seems clear that arable land for raising livestock wont be able to keep up."
Gates, the co-founder and chairman of Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, regularly blogs about the future of food on his website, Gates Notes.
Bill says there are great innovations taking place in food production that can create delicious plant-based meat substitutes that mimic the taste and texture of meat.
Gates, 57, says the innovations can also help with hunger-relief efforts in poor countries. In 2012, the Gates Foundation announced plans to invest in genetically-modified agriculture to combat world hunger.
While the move has been criticized by some, Gates insists a plant-based diet is the cornerstone of superior health, hunger relief, and is better for the environment.

His software is as good as his science.
God gave me a set of canine teeth, I assume for eating meat.
The difference is the fish doesn't need a teleprompter.
Vegetables are what food eats.
Gates has lost it. That is if he ever had it!

Well said.
I remember a story told to me when I was a child. Some relative who was real nasty during his life was dying in a hospital with some relatives around him. He suddenly said “Do you smell fire? What’s that burning smell?” His eyes got big and he just said “Oh” and died. Something to think about.
Wow - Gates is a moron?
Water is by far the most abundant “greenhouse” gas. Livestock has little to do with atmospheric concentrations of H2O.
Overall - *The Sun* is by far the largest contributing factor to earths temperature. (Not humans, cars, factories, or livestock.)

Isn’t it nice to know that when you contribute to Grover Norquist’s Americans for TAx Reform or CPAC, that it may well be going for Microsoft lobbying??

51%, besides the oceans and volcanoes and forest fires and stuff.
Gates has always been an ass, and that’s on his good days.
My Burmese python curled up in a big glass bread pan one night when she was shedding. The last thing I expected was to hear a big, wet python fart. She went to live with another family a few weeks after that incident. My wife was dangling a mouse by the tail for her dinner and she grabbed my wife's hand around the base of her thumb. It was a chore to remove the python. More than enough trauma for my wife with the u-shaped tooth marks oozing blood.
Goodness! Great story.
I’m eating them as fast as I can.
Did he ever have any common sense? He sounds as out of touch with reality as Al Gore.
Another distant relative kicked out the end of his bed yelling “they’re coming for me” and died. Not saying all my relatives are nasty but ....
Is he getting enough protein in his diet?
