You took that out of context- he says he is old and/or sick in the same question.

could be wisdomI find it extremely odd for any pope to leave right before Easter, the most important celebration of the Catholic Church. It's so important that I would have expected Benedict to try and stick it out.
Now it's more than likely that there will be no pope in office for the Easter Blessing.

Has there ever been a Papal abdication that was voluntary?

Or, he watched the Grammy Awards last night, and realized that all hope is indeed lost..
At least he didn't Tweet the announcement..

I have always thought the anti-Christ would be far more intelligent than Obama, in order to deceive so many people. But it has been shown, instead, that the people are much more stupid and wicked than I gave them credit for.

Easter is March 31st, they could have all the cardinals in Rome ready to go on March 1st, they have enough warning to be there and get on with it, there will no appetite for slowing things down, maybe thats Benedicts thought, make sure they get on with it and don’t drag it out, force them to get on with it.
It took 19 days from death of john paul til Benedict got elected but that included the death and mourning period too, so they should be ready to go by easter no problems.

If he were going to die soon, I don’t think he’d resign.

Two weeks notice.
Enough time to get the Cardinals together and provide for an orderly succession.
Poor Baraq! He has been upstaged.

Is it too early/ghoulish to put in a plug for Canadas Cardinal Ouellet?Nothing ghoulish about it, since Pope Benedict hasn't said that he's about to die.
Btw, I think Cdl. Ouellet has a lot of good qualities.

maybe i’m cynical but popes don’t resign or go and resign, they die, who knows, maybe he’s sick ,maybe he got the warning of “you’re leaving one way or another, you decide”. Its Not like Popes have not been bumped off before.
