former CBS broadcaster Dan Rather (Now with AXS-TV) was understandably asked a question about Rathergate the story on George W. Bushs service in the Air National Guard that used forged documents in the report.
Rather responded brusquely:
Number 1 the facts of case are not in dispute.
Number 2 no one had ever established that the documents were forged

Dan Rather thinks that his audience is obligated to prove fraud. He is not obligated to prove authenticity.

Rather accused W of shirking his duty. The onus was on Rather to prove that charge. He failed to do so. Now he’s trying to reverse that onus.
BTW, so far, it has not been disproved that Rather has regular intimate relations with goats. The rumors involving sheep were, OTOH, proven false.

My first thought was, he lied in every word, That hoary cripple, with malicious eye Askance to watch the working of his lie On mine, and mouth scarce able to afford Suppression of the glee, that pursed and scored Its edge, at one more victim gained thereby.

Within 24 hours there were over 40 lines of evidence demonstrating that the documents were false. There ended up being around 70 separate lines of evidence demonstrating that. Among these was the known fact that George Bush wasn’t even due to have his flight physical at the time stated in those documents, as the schedule for those was specific to his birth month which was not to occur for months.

Moreover, all of the National Guard terminology and procedure was unique to the Army National Guard, rather than the Air National Guard. Thus was the finger pointed directly at Bill Burkett as the initiator of the documents -- a retiree from the Army guard, a liberal activist, a long-time Bush-hater...and an associate of Rather's daughter. Not to mention a little bit wacky.
Rather's producer, Mary Mapes, faxed the documents to CBS from a Kinko's in Abilene, TX -- about twenty miles from Burkett's Baird, TX home.

I thought they proved the fonts weren’t avaliable back then, that it was actually a Word document with a font that they didn’t have available back then.

Another poster called out the documents during the broadcast...within minutes...Buckhead posted a bit later. The timeline is laid out in the book To Set the Record Straight.
