He wore the English crown, but he ended up defeated, humiliated and reviled.
Now things are looking up for King Richard III. Scientists announced Monday that they had found the monarch's 500-year-old remains under a parking lot in the city of Leicester -- a discovery Richard's fans say will inspire new research into his maligned history.
University of Leicester researchers say tests on a battle-scarred skeleton unearthed last year prove "beyond reasonable doubt" that it is the king, who died at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, and whose remains have been missing for centuries.
"Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England, has been found," said the university's deputy registrar, Richard Taylor....
DNA from the skeleton matched a sample taken from a distant living relative of Richard's sister. Geneticist Turi King said Michael Ibsen, a Canadian carpenter living in London, shares with the skeleton a rare strain of mitochondrial DNA. She said combined with the archaeological evidence, that left little doubt the skeleton belonged to Richard.
Ibsen said he was "stunned" to discover he was related to the king -- he is a 17th great-grand-nephew of Richard's older sister.

The joke is that now that Richard III’s skeleton has been ID’ed, Queen Elizabeth is planning to leave Britain and live in some place without extradition.
There are a lot of famous people whose graves will never be found because they and any markings indicating location, were deliberately destroyed. General Braddock, for instance.

Genghis Khan too, although they are closing in on him.
Thanks
What if the archeologists did one of those crime lab forensic reconstructions? See what a renowned medieval king really looked like, compare it to known likenesses, could be interesting.
That's it. Off to the FR penalty box for a million years!
You mean I don't get a prize? I thought I would get a free download of the Free Republic Disc Drives going back to the first post. I was hoping Jim Robinson would announce "Now, the winner of our disc content!"
“Im sure hed have been willing to give his kingdom for a hearse.”

Sharon Kay Penman’s “The Sunne in Splendour”, presents Richard III more sympathetic than Shakespeare did. But that does not negate the fact that he was in the Tower when the nephews (I believe) were murdered.
The Yorkist-Lancastrian war , also known as the War of the Roses pitted family member against family member due to intermarrying between the White and Red Rose..
York should have him! BUT he needs a cool tomb—we got the skull, how about we re-do the face so we can see what he really looked like? Make a special about it! He wasn’t as bad as history paints him—was he ruthless, yes, just like all rulers of his day (and today as well—just ask Princess Diana—you will need a ouija board).

After his brother died he had his 2 young nephews declared bastards and took the throne.
The boys disappeared soon after.
He was the last English King to die in battle.
That stuff is tame compared to some things in Chinese and Korean history
...Although Yi Bang-won, Taejo’s fifth son by Queen Sineui, had contributed most to assisting his father’s rise to power, the prime minister Jeong Do-jeon and Nam Eun used their influence on King Taejo to name his eighth son....
.........
....Both sides were well aware of each other’s great animosity and were getting ready to strike first. After the sudden death of Queen Sindeok, and while King Taejo was still in mourning for his second wife, Yi Bang-won struck first by raiding the palace and killed Jeong Do-jeon and his supporters as well as Queen Sindeok’s two sons (his half-brothers) including the crown prince in 1398....
..........
They were literally slaughtering their own family members for power. There was another instance where a King slaughtered everyone in his and his wife’s family who could possibly challenge him for the throne. He didn’t even wait for anyone to get that idea.
Ow. That hurt.
That’s very interesting, what’s that other King’s name?
Can you imagine if say the Kennedy’s were 13th century monarchs? I think they would fit right in.
It’s bad enough they were 20th century monarchs. They inflicted a helluva lot more damage (and the martyrdom for a moral degenerate was the cherry on top).
The one that pretty much killed off all his rivals?
Now I have to search for that one.
