Geraldo Rivera declares himself a 'moderate Republican' as he eyes U.S. Senate run

TRENTON — It looks like Geraldo Rivera is already prepping his platform.
One day after announcing on his radio show that he is "truly considering" running in 2014 for the U.S. Senate seat now held by New Jersey's Frank Lautenberg, Rivera amped up his message today in a television interview and a column on the Fox News Latino website.
The longtime media personality portrayed himself as a moderate Republican who is fiscally conservative but also supports gay marriage and Roe v. Wade.
"Democrats have a huge registration advantage in New Jersey," Rivera said during a short interview on the Fox News morning show "Fox and Friends." "But I really do believe, as a moderate Republican, there is a point of view that is unrepresented in states like New Jersey. There can be a new vitalization of the Republican party."
Rivera — a longtime Fox News TV anchor — is the first Republican to publicly express interest in the seat. Although the 89-year-old Lautenberg has not given any indication he won't seek re-election, Newark Mayor Cory Booker recently said he was interested running, and a number of other Democrats are also waiting in the wings. Rivera, 69, a resident of Edgewater in Bergen County and former owner of the Two River Times newspaper in Red Bank, said in today's interview he envisions a Republican Party "we extol the virtues of good business and fiscal policy and fight the deficit and don't advocate the printing of money in obscene amounts just to cover our debts."

A “moderate” Republican? We already have too many of them.
Not much better than a run-of-the-mill democrat.
“I endorsed the economic platform of Romney/Ryan in 2012 because Democrats were denying the deficit and decrying necessary changes in federal entitlements. Unfettered, theirs is a recipe for generational catastrophe. To pretend the government can just print money is untenable and irresponsible.
“But I voted for Obama/Biden because the fiscal threat posed by the Democrats seemed less immediate then the GOP’s intrusion into the private space of abortion, as well as Republicans’ opposition to both the inevitability of immigration reform and the rights of gay people to get married. Those things I believe, so how am I a Republican?”
Forget Geraldo....the fact that NJ voters put in a 89 year old man as one of their senators is mind blowing.
And since the Republican party has zero requirements for party membership or candidates Jerry Rivers, Michael Bloomberg or even Martin Sheen could call themselves Republicans and run for office with the full backing of the GOP elites.
Heck they don’t even require loyalty as we saw with the Lisa Murkowski debacle.

I wonder if Bette Midler would vouch for his character.
Laugh all we want to but remember before the republican primaries started, we also laughed at Romney’s chances of winning the nomination.
I would send him money if he ran as a democrat.

“vitalization”- a nice euphemism for prancing to the left. If that is what it takes to make the Republicans ‘vital’, then the GOP isn’t worth saving or taking over.

Zell Miller was probably the last Conservative Democrat. I met him the first time he attended CPAC. As he was signing his book for me, I said, “I think you have always belonged here.” He looked up at me and smiled and said, “Yes, I realize that now.”
A moderate Republican is somewhat to the left of a RINO.
My self-described “Moderate Republican” daughter, (who is an NPR fan) voted for guess who. Sigh.
Im going ot be watching Rivera’s hair to see if the gray gradually gets touched up a bit as he goes into this next ‘phase’.
Fortunately for Geraldo, he can't ever be named "biggest joke in the Senate" as long as "Senator Al Franken" is still there.
moderate Republican = conservative Democrat = Democrat
There is no difference.
