The battle to demonize the National Rifle Association became a religious crusade when the Rev. Jim Wallis, CEO of Sojourners and progressive spiritual advisor to President Obama, convened some clergy for a witch trial.
As a foreword, if you join the NRA, as about 250,000 folks have done in the past few weeks, youll be affirming your support for the Second Amendment, not the Nicene Creed.
Wallis rounded up a posse of fellow progressive clergy for a press conference in Washington, DC on Jan. 15. Their heresy detector spiked after Wayne LaPierre, CEO and Executive Vice President of the NRA, responded to irrational calls to ban so-called assault weapons, following the murderous rampage at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Conn. by a mentally disturbed gunman.
LaPierre called instead for armed guards in schools, saying:
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.
Wallis condemned the statement, as morally mistaken, theologically dangerous, and religiously repugnant.
And that was after Wallis and his Sojourners pledged to a Covenant for Civility in 2010:
We pledge to God and to each other that we will lead by example in a country where civil discourse seems to have broken down. We will work to model a better way in how we treat each other in our many faith communities, even across religious and political lines. We will strive to create in our congregations safe and sacred spaces for common prayer and community discussion as we come together to seek God's will for our nation and our world.
The Rev. Jim should know theres not a jot or a tittle in the Bible condemning the principle of LaPierrres statement as morally mistaken, theologically dangerous, and religiously repugnant, which is probably why Wallis didnt cite Scripture. There are many passages, however, confirming its core truth?killing to protect innocent life is biblically justified. Take the Book of Esther, for example.
In his column, The NRAs Dangerous Theology, two days later, Wallis repeated his rant against the NRA, quoting Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was to no avail, which is why Wallis admittedly added his own special spin to Kings words:
King said people often hate each other because they fear each other, they fear each other because they dont know each other, they dont know each other because they cannot communicate, they cannot communicate because they are separated. I would add to his words: and in that separation they seek guns. As an evangelical Christian, Im going to make this theological.
Wallis missed or ignored that Rev. King was heavily armed, and for good reason. According to Adam Winkler writing for the Huffington Post:
William Worthy, a journalist who covered the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, reported that once, during a visit to King's parsonage, he went to sit down on an armchair in the living room and, to his surprise, almost sat on a loaded gun. Glenn Smiley, an adviser to King, described King's home as an arsenal. King applied for a concealed carry permit in Alabama.
According to Wallis, LaPierres great heresy is classifying people as good or bad instead of a mixture of both. Actually, its much worse. The Lord says, There is no one righteous, not even one. Thankfully, we are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Despite our ongoing sinful state, God, unlike Wallis, makes moral and legal distinctions between bad guys who shed innocent blood, and good guys who take them out, condemning the former and commending the latter.
The next time he waxes theological with his White House disciple, Wallis should ask about the Mexican teenagers who were murdered with some of the 2,000 assault weapons knowingly placed in the hands of a drug cartel by the Obama administrations ill-conceived Fast and Furious scheme.
Then theres Obamas statement from 1999, as recalled by John R. Lott when both were teaching at the University of Chicago: I dont think people should be able to own guns.
Wallis should apply his heresy detector to Obamas claim to support the individual right to bear arms under the Second Amendment, a claim belied by his record. As an Illinois state senator, Obama voted twice against the right of Illinois residents to protect themselves against home invasions.
Its constitutionally comatose politicians, not God, who disarm the innocent, giving bad guys the advantage.
Wallis concludes with his nine-year-old sons opinion about guns:
I dont think that we should just let anybody have any kind of gun and any kind of bullets that they want. Thats pretty crazy.
Wallis might want to get the opinion of twin nine-year-olds in Georgia whose mother saved them from an intruder by shooting him until her six-shot revolver was empty.
As Jesus said, When a strong man, fully armed, guards his estate, his possessions are secure.
Its the Second Amendment and biblical version of social justice.
Bring it on—it’s our side that is armed-——just kidding...
Godless clergy from the church of man.
Wallis and his ilk server another master.
Liberals bending the Bible the Bible to their world view. It’s in the Bible itself the Apostle Paul talks of it.
Argumentum ad filium.......means arguing by way of children...it’s what liberals do. They take a little cutesy quote from a child and then pretend likes it’s some deep intelligent meaning. Wallis, wow, glad I won’t have to be handcuffed to him when he dies.
“liberalism” is simply the political expression of the religion of Humanism, then see tagline.
More of Nancy Pelosi’s 2004-2006 agenda to close the “god gap” in the public’s mind by finding left wing mouthpieces to play up the religious angle of their positions.
I guess we only hear Martin Luther King referred to as “Doctor King” instead of REVEREND because of lying phony reverends like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton using that title.
My “safe and sacred space” has at least two CCWL folks packing heat every Sunday. Sometimes more.
What is his view on the Holy Hand Grenade (of Antioch)?
Are we cool, then?
Godless clergy from the church of man.
Yep. They can call themselves clergy but that can’t call themselves Christian otherwise they would be against gay marriage and abortion amongst other things.
Jesus said, “and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.”. Luke 22:36. That’s right, Jesus said your weapon was more important than the shirt on your back. Also, see my tagline.
Wallice is a RAT.
Exactly I loathe this people - why?. Back in 2005, my father passed away and we had an open coffin. My brother’s female friend came to the service. As I approached my father’s coffin with my cousin. I notice a black large object under his hand. So I pulled it out and the large button says Matthew 24. At that time I did not realize what it was. Then my brother’s female friend saw me doing this and said “O I placed that there for him” so I naively placed it back. When I got home I become curious so I went online to do some research on it. OMG!! I became so furious. I was saying to myself “Keep your dam politics out of my father coffin! How dare you!” Matthew 25 group spouted Liberal Christianity. This POS does not realize my parents were Democrats but they voted for both President Bushes and hated the Clintons. I was so livid to know my father was buried with the garbage. I wish I could exhume him to remove it from him. I learned that Jim Wallis and this Matthew 24 group were tied to together that is when I learned more about Jim Wallis. These people will be the type of people that will be easily deceived by the Anti-Christ for they are not grounded on the true Word of God.
I get the impression that progressives are itching for a cause upon which they can pile their agenda and discredit and banish conservative values from civil discourse. This is but the second phase of the same battle for ObamaCare and even for fiat money and infinite perpetual debt. It is all just difference sides on the same loaded dice of socialism and its fraudulent triumph of ideology over truth.
Jesus and the Apostles warned of false preachers and teachers. We even are warned that the simple truth of the Gospel would be morphed and altered such that anyone who refused to accept the progressive interpretation would be kicked out of the church. Jesus said that there were people in society who were hostile to truth. I would encourage everyone to read Chapter 8 of John, for in verse 41 Jesus, the Savior is brutally plain: people who are hostile to truth are doing the deeds of their father, Satan, and these people seek to kill Him (and anyone who follows Him) because that truth has “no place in you”.
I think that we are seeing a form of spiritual warfare against the truths that America were founded on. Yes, some of that founding was not truth at all, but notice how I worded my claim. Of the many attributes of the founding of the society now organized as the United States of America, many of those attributes such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (and property) are direct expressions of truth that can also be found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Socialism is directly contrary to those values. It is based directly and explicitly on violations of three of the Ten Commandments (lies, coveting and theft). The Apostle Paul instructs us that coveting is idolatry, (eg: Col 3:5).
We can see in Jesus’ own Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard in Matthew chapter 20 many free market principles. This parable ends with a rhetorical question from Jesus that destroys socialism: “Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with my own?” (Matthew 20:15)
Under socialism it is a crime to do what you want with your own property. Moreover, capitalism must be voluntary and peaceful or the exchange it is based on is not free. Or to put it another way, when exchange is not free, voluntary and peaceful, it is not capitalism. It is something else. It may be fascism or communism, but it is not capitalism.
People who fancy themselves as ministers can say anything they want. But when they misrepresent the economic truths in Scripture they disqualify themselves. Nobody can be a minister of Jesus Christ and advocate coveting of someone else’s property, theft even when using government to effect the theft, or violation of God’s laws of marriage.
Such people are feeding the monster that will devour them someday, for the instant such people are no longer useful to the people who are hell-bent on building the secular Utopia, they will be dealt with severely as they are being thrown under the bus.
the left used fake clergy and used religion to push prohibition too.
Get a handful of frauds, announce they are clergy, tell media clergy is against guns and the low info dumb voter thinks this is the truth.
Maybe this fake clergy should attack homosexuality etc which is against the Holy Bible and religion, minus that fake religion called unitarian
“Big Religion” has completely marginalized itself in pursuit of secular approval.
There’s not a single major denomination today that I have any respect for or a desire to align myself with.
(I’m a cradle Episcopalian, BTW.)
