Gun control advocates, in their infinite wisdom, seem to think they have the definitive answer to this question. The answer is "less than ten."
Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York is seeking extensive gun control legislation to "tighten the assault weapons ban" and "ban all large-capacity gun clips." To these ends, he addressed the gun "extremists" by quipping, "It's simple -- no one hunts with an assault rifle. No one needs ten bullets to kill a deer."
The first time I remember being introduced to this feeble (yet somehow, incredibly persistent) argument for gun control was while watching an Eddie Murphy movie called The Distinguished Gentleman as a kid. In the film, Eddie Murphy's character is a con artist who scams his way into a vacant seat in Congress. He initially chums up to the House chairman of the energy committee, who is your stereotypical greedy, right-wing, oil-sucking politician that Hollywood loves to portray. He's anti-gay, anti-environment, anti-cancer prevention, and he also happens to be in bed with (you guessed it!) the pro-gun lobby. So he and Eddie Murphy go duck hunting with military-grade rifles to promote such weapons' recreational use.
The whole thing is purposefully absurd, with Eddie Murphy puzzling over these gun nuts firing hundreds of rounds in the air only to have one duck fall from the sky, which Eddie Murphy suggests "must've had a heart attack."
The implication is simple. Like Cuomo, the filmmakers expect the people watching to assume that the gun control debate centers on whether or not weapons capable of delivering large numbers of rounds have a legitimate recreational use. And if they do not have such utility, there is simply no need for Americans to have access to them.

How many 'hunters' do you know that just own ONE gun? I have many friends with more than 100, and plenty of ammo to support any war!
As many to deter a gang of Crypts from breaking into your home.
One of the finest assault rifles ever made only held 9 rounds.
The M-1 Caliber 30 garand.
No finer rifle ever made. A little on the pricey side, but well worth the money.
Bolt action with a Scope? That's a sniper rifle and those are next.
“The M-1 Caliber 30 garand.”
That my friend is no assault rifle, it is a battle rifle! The M1A is also a nice rifle.
My two hand guns are revolvers, have one upstairs and one downstairs so I wouldn't have many cartridges to shoot. So, I got a rifle with a 25 cartridge magazine.
Having only seven cartridges is ridiculous. Is he going to check every person who has a gun to make sure they don't put in more than 7 cartridges?
That argument fell to pieces as the left collided with itself when federal and local regulations mandated car seats and pressured car pooling and bike riding. You can't fit a family of four in a Smart car if one of them is in a car seat. Two car seats? Forget about the compact. A Family of 5 with one car seat or gawd forbid you want to take grandma with the family to the museum.... The attack on SUVs diminished.
Same ridiculous arguments here against guns except there will be no logical discussion about the original intent of weapons and their place in our founding. The most obvious and intentional reasons for preserving our rights to keep and bear arms will be avoided as people debate how many shots and what caliber is absolutely necessary to shoot deer, ducks, turkey, moose, rabbits, squirrels, bears, coyotes, etc.
I think I have enough. I go to the range. I get more. Therefore I am.
An irony that is lost around the time of our finding is that the citizenry often had more advanced weapons than the governments could afford to provide. This was true right up through the civil war (for small arms not artillary).
During the revolutionary war, many citizens had modified muskets with rifled barrels because hunting in America motivated better range and accuracy. Rifled muskets were an advanced technology that the military followed the citizenry on. I don’t recall that many citizens invested in artillary.
As many as it takes to defend the Constitution.
When the smoke clears, I want a loaded 30 rd magazine in reserve.
Until the bad guy is dead.
Gun Zen. Love it!
Stay “thirsty”, my friend! :-)
***So NY lowers magazine capacity to 7 in direct response to the Sandy Hook shooting.****
It has always been about handguns. Assault rifles are just a decoy to try and get their anti-gun foot in the door.
Once they get a ban on AWs then they will use the same reasons to go after handguns.
John Kennedy killed with a 5 shot bolt action rifle.
Medgar Evers, shot with a 5 shot 1917 bolt action Enfield rifle.
Martin Luther King, shot with a 4 shot Remington 760 pump action Gamemaster rifle.
Bobby Kennedy with a .22 Iver Johnson Cadet revolver.
George Wallace wounded with a 5 shot Charter Arms .38spl revolver.
Howard Johnsons shooter killed nine, wounded thirteen with a 4 shot RUGER .44 mag Deerslayer rifle.
Gerald Ford attacked with a 7 shot 1911 semi auto.
Edmond OK post office with two National Guard 7 shot 1911 pistols.
Ronald Reagan and Jim Brady with an RG-14 .22 revolver.
What do they all have in common? NONE over 7 rounds, yet after each one came a cry of panic to ban them.
Obama supports assault weapons and high cap magazines in the hands of Lybian, Egyptian, and Syrian rebels so they can overthrow a tyrannical regime, but not in the hands of American citizens.
***The M-1 Caliber 30 garand.***
Several years ago, someone in NYC walked out in the street and fired ONE ROUND from a Garand.
The NYC newspapers immediately demanded a ban on semi auto rifles.
Pump and semi auto hotguns are “street sweepers”.
