Holder: We Must Answer 'Hard Questions' About Gun Rights
Breitbart ^ | 12/15/12 | Mary Chastain

Posted on 12/15/2012 9:35:32 PM PST by Nachum

Attorney General Eric Holder made a few remarks about the massacre at Newtown, Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary School that should raise some eyebrows.

"As a nation I think we have to ask ourselves some hard questions. We gather too often to talk about these kinds of incidents. We need to discuss who we are as a nation, talk about the freedoms that we have, the rights that we have and how those might be used in a responsible way. But for now I think we should concentrate on dealing with the situation in Connecticut and we are doing, and I said, the best we can at the Justice Department and throughout federal law enforcement."

Mr. Holder has not been one to hide his hatred of guns. In March Breitbart News uncovered a video of Mr. Holder talking to the Woman's National Democratic Club in 1995. He wanted a campaign to "really brainwash people into thinking about guns in a vastly different way" and to use anti-smoking ads as a way to "change the hearts and minds of people in Washington, DC" about guns.

In Operation Fast and Furious the ATF allowed guns to walk into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. Emails have shown officers discussing how to use these stats to enforce tougher gun control laws.

The mental health aspect is a very difficult issue to deal with. I'm pretty sure Loughner (Gabby Giffords shooting) and the Aurora Mall shooter were schizophrenics. Schizophrenia strikes mostly young adults who were perfectly normal beforehand. Its onset can be fairly rapid and for family and friends to understand what is happening can be very difficult. Especially since the schizo will withdraw from familiar people and that may be the only thing they know is going on.

To complicate the matter a large majority of schizophrenics aren't violent so even when it's recognized it's not reasonable to assume that they will be violent. In addition a schizophrenic's mind is so detached from reality it's very hard to communicate with them.

I'm not arguing against better diagnosis, treatment and improved restrictions for certain activities for the mentally ill just pointing out that it's a tough problem to tackle.

I’m an English scholar and I specialise in older forms of the language. That includes Middle and colonial English. I practically speak like I’m Victorian.

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

In the 17th-18th century this would’ve been syntactically similar to British English. The punctuation suggests to me that a modern equivalent would be:

“A well regulated Militia (given its neccessity to the security of a free State AND given the right of the people to keep and bear Arms), shall not be infringed.”

If that were the case then the ability of the states to regulate the personal ownership of firearms within their own jurisdictions cannot be infringed by the Federal goverment. This ALSO means individual states can determine for themselves who qualifies as “Militia” and what constitutes “well regulated”.

But that’s a states issue, not a federal matter.

I do admit I’ve never heard of the expert referred to in that link though. And I’m English, so I am de-facto wrong on the internets. Additionally, Jefferson himself clarified it differently.

sadly those up there for the most part and in DC cannot grasp that.

They would rather carry on wiht their lives and ignore their kids whilst their kids sit there not knowing about failures, respect, morals etc.

The media will not mention it due to them getting nannies, day care and then the schools to raise kids for them.

It’s hard being a parent but it seems some wantt o live their own life and then wonder how their child is not in the mainstream.

This kid or what is being reported was supposed to be homeschooled but the mother is a teacher so who was looking after the kid growing up,.

I heard Gretchen Carlson this morning say how she told the baby sitter to watch him carefuly and do not take her eyes off her son and then went on to say how great the mother was for understanding how the kid was.

HUH, How was she a good mother by going out and getting baby sitters and him turning out like this.

I;m so sick of so called parents not raising their child, not sitting down for dinner and talking about issues, morals etc

No this is the left wing modern parenting, and this is the results

Additionally, Jefferson himself clarified it differently.

As well as dozens of other citations in the Federalist Papers which make it clear what the Founder's intentions were. As well as the clear meaning expressed in the DoI.

I notice you completely ignored the final lines which say "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Very scholarly.

And I’m English, so I am de-facto wrong on the internets.

Claiming victimhood status pre-emptively is as lame as using a non-sequitur fact as a point of argument a tactic that I did not need to indulge in.

But first, how about some straight answers on Fast & Furious.
Like, do you have a right to ship assault weapons to Mexican drug gangs that end up killing American agents and then you get to lie about it under oath but not have to do a stretch in the slammer?

If I completely ignored the final line I suggest you read up the concepts of clauses and parentheses, then read my previous post again. With your eyes open this time.

Same result. You still ignored it. It does have meaning.
