A North Carolina community college has been accused of violating the First Amendment rights of students after they told a club they could not use the word “Christmas” to promote a Christmas tree sale.
“It’s ridiculous that anyone would have to think twice about using the word ‘Christmas’ as part of a Christmas tree sale,” said Matt Sharp, an attorney with Alliance Defending Freedom.
ADF sent a letter to officials at Western Piedmont Community College urging them to either reconsider their decision to censor the word “Christmas” – or else face a possible lawsuit.
College officials did not return multiple phone calls and email messages seeking comment.
The student club, called the BEST Society, was planning to sell the Christmas trees to raise money for Angel Tree, an organization that provides Christmas presents to children.
Club members followed college protocol and submitted forms to promote the sale. The proposed text read, “The BEST Society will be selling Christmas Trees…”
But when the announcement appeared on the college’s website and in other venues – it had been altered. Ever reference to “Christmas Trees” had been replaced with “holiday trees.”
The community relations director allegedly told the students, “We cannot market your trees in association solely with a Christian event.”
As a result of the change, the club began receiving complaints from the community – and some customers told the students they would not purchase trees because of the change in wording.

Yes. And they are often the same ones who have their hands out for the handout, too. Either that or they want to take over and decide who benefits.
In my area, the county government “helps” the churches who donate items to the poor by identifying needy families and dispensing the church donations. But the government prevents any mention of Christmas or church or God and behaves as if the bounty is coming from the benevolent and caring government. I will no longer donate via my church because of this.
They’d have no problem with anything to do with Islam, you can bet money on it.

Amazing to me how Freedom OF Religion has somehow morphed into Freedom FROM Religion. Unless its Islam—then it mandatory.

Christmas was declared a NATIONAL holiday in 1870 by President Grant.

Time for the airing of grievances and the feats of strength - these people need to be beaten bloody with a Festivus pole.
I would expect brave students to girdle any tree looking like a Christmas tree. Take care of that little campus matter.
This was decided by someone. They should be identified by name and publicly shamed.
Yes, this purging of Christmas is stupid and offensive. But it is a state school advertising the trees for the club on its web site. I can see a fear of a lawsuit from the other direction motivating them as well.
Then, when the libs and atheists so much as open their traps complaining about THAT, immediately pull the racist/bigot card right back on them and assert that they are anti-Hispanic and Intolerant.
