Several former workers at a Hostess Brands plant in Rocky Mount said Friday they were relieved after the company filed for bankruptcy, seeking to close its operations.
The closings will mean the loss of about 18,500 jobs overall.
Theyve been holding this over our head for a long time and now its here, said Lamont Phillips, an oven operator and the president of the local union. They had to do it.
I dont have to deal with that anymore. The things that they were trying to do to us, it wasnt fair.
They always hold that over our heads, that theyll close it down. So, Im like, OK. Close it down.
And on Friday, Hostess did. The flag at a Hostess plant in Rocky Mount hung at half staff on Friday afternoon, and many former workers there hung around outside to talk about what had happened.
Hostess had offered an 8 percent pay cut, but Phllips said that wasnt going to work for the employees.
Were not making a whole lot of money out here and then we got to take a pay cut like that. Then you got your health benefits going up, he said. They stopped paying into the pension fund.

Let’s see 8% pay cut or a 100% pay cut, .... wait I’m thinking, not sure, well 100 is more than 8, so let’s go with the 100%.
Waaaaaah. Booooooo Hoooooo. Sob sob sob.
Only a total MORON thinks losing ALL income, ALL health insurance, ALL pension contributions, etc. is better than working with the company to keep a job.
Enjoy giving fellatio at truck stops you idiots.
HA! About half of those simply hired.com job postings are duplicates for “oven operator” and a lot of them are for “oven helper”.
Calling the pun police!
lol
high five for the Jayne Cobb reference!
“My wife sees these folks at the Rocky Mount Wal-Mart all the time... using the EBT to buy better food than shes buying with honest money, then taking it out to load it up in a better car than shes driving”
Just wait. The time is coming when it’s gonna be hard on everyone. For the EBT crowd, it’s gonna be hell.
After Obama's 2009 inauguration he got slammed for appearing on O'Reilly and saying,I want to know why $150 million is necessary of taxpayers money to have an inauguration. A hundred and fifty million dollars could have gone into the private sector and, with the condition that America is in right now, and done a lot more good than a celebration.
I can’t stand these dumb clucks. I’m looking for work and these guys should have counted their blessings. Tell you what, if it was up to me, I’d hire people who did not vote for Obama and if I could, I’d lay off the ones who did.

Hostess Shrugged
I hope some of the non-union workers (the people who work for a living) kick Lamont’s goatsmellin’, greedy commie ass.
Yeah, evil hostess, expecting them to **gasp** actually do work! Now they get to sit home on their asses and collect Obama money. Winning! Stupid idiots.

If ‘they’ are just referring to the fact that the job can’t be held over their head anymore, decent statement.
If that is NOT what they meant, then it appears the owner was running a Slave Shop, where the employees(???) were unable to leave and seek other means of self support.
The answer more than likely in the middle, till the Employer ‘kicks ‘em out’, the bennies will NOT kick in, now that they are ‘free’ from the shackles of work(?) they will be able to get all the free goodies.
I don’t know how this unemployment works any more, but I remember from my hiring days that at least the drawer had to openly ‘appear’ to be seeking work.
Of course, my stock answer to anyone showing up looking for a laborers job at 11AM (early for most) was “you be here at 6 AM and catch ANY of the dump trucks going to the job. Check in with me first”.
My ‘open rule’ was “One that shows up at 6AM, lunch in hand, work clothes on, had a job, very few questions asked”.
Since I didn’t ‘advertise’ it that way, I never had a lot of people I ‘must’ hire.
My SIL been out of work (combination of things) and I found something for him - mostly part time, but steady, his own boss and he could get about 400 per week dropping off newspapers in their truck. (Hrs 02-06 +-)
After not a whole lot of thought I was told no sense going off unemployment for that...Of course FOR someone really interested in working that is just something to get by on, allowing you to look for a REAL job during the day.
Of course 1939 has something to do with that train of thought and we all know us ‘old fartz’ are just plain stoooopid.
If that happens, my wife won't be going to the Wal-Mart except in daylight hours, with an armed escort.
Gee. I wonder if the company as a whole was in dire financial straights BECAUSE OF THE PARASITIC UNION WORKFORCE BLEEDING IT DRY?
It just took it this long to bleed out...
He used to make a lot of dough.......
Yeah, but don’t forget, he kneaded it too!
Obama/leftists supposedly lament the loss of “manufacturing” in the US of A, one of the prime examples of why jobs are leaving.
The whole community will be hurt by the plant closing, you morons!
...many other business that support Hostess will be be hurt or have to close.
