My explanation is that Petraeus was/is a geeky kind of guy, nice, smart, accomplished, but never what we would call, a ladies’ man. It didn’t bother him most of his life. He was busy doing what he did best and that didn’t involve being a ladies’ man.
Then came Afghanistan and Broadwell at the same time. Unhappy, and probably suffering some self doubt for the first time in his long career, Broadwell made him feel younger and attractive and she offered companionship and probably an ear for his doubts and concerns. She probably offered something his wife didn’t a different kind of companionship on a more professional level, feeding his ego and assuaging his doubts. Petraeus probably never intended to hurt his wife. It just happened.
I was thinking more like Delilah, not Bathsheba.

I’m sure the fact that his wife is a leftist harridan had nothing to do with it. Talk about just giving up and letting yourself go. That doesn’t excuse his behavior, but it does make it more likely to happen in the first place.
The author is too cerebral in his analysis. Sexual attraction is designed to overpower the rational mind, and it is exceedingly difficult to maintain moral purity. That’s why there are many moral strictures to act as a bulwark against that kind of temptation. This is especially true if you’re a man in the presence of an attractive, smart, and aggressive woman who is obviously willing to become physically intimate. Yes, many man do pass by the temptation, but I’m willing to be that those who do reject it spend much of their lives imagining what might have been. The rest succumb to temptation.
That’s not where my mind went with this. The first thing I thought about were the sheer volumes of Democrat horndogs who have mounted everything this side of a knot in a tree and been richly appreciated by their party and the media. The double standard floors me. Second, I was thinking about Alinsky’s rule about punishing your enemy with their own rules. Petraeus was talked about as a Republican presidential candidate; now this. Third, I know Obama has a long history of destroying opponents with revelations about private sex lives. This fits the pattern.
God help us.

Petraeus is a long distance runner. Long distance running can be very beneficial. It reduces stress and usually improves overall health. Long distance running to prove your superiority over your subordinates creates an unhealthy command climate. Some people become addicted to running. There is “The Runner’s High” that some people have. It can become addicting. Like any other addiction, it can be very detrimental. The need to run means that there is less time for other activities including business activities. There are studies that claim that years of long distance running, coupled with a low body fat percentage, robs the brain of necessary materials. I would assume that Petraeus has a low body fat. If you run to prove your superiority over your subordinates, then I think you have an inferiority complex. Petraeus was pushing 60 years of age. A younger woman takes an interest in him. He can show that age isn’t affecting him and he’s not inferior. That’s my take.
