An officer starts believing in his Godhood about the time he makes Bird Colonel (O-6). When he gets his first star his Godhood is confirmed. By the fourth star he starts believing that Godhood is beneath him. A combatant theater commander is master of the universe - just ask his staff.

I think the ancient Romans had the best idea. During the triumphant parade through the City a slave stood behind the conquering general and reminded him that “Cesar, this too will pass.”

Unfortunately there is no one in our current defense establishment that is tasked to do that.

I was in Sicily for six months with the AF in the 80’s. One of the moments that stands out in my mind even to this day, was the image of a naked one star general running around the locker room looking for a towel for his 4 star boss who was currently in the shower.

No matter how far up the ladder one gets, there is always someone higher.
