Given the recent issues the FreeRepublic web site has been having, I thought it would be useful to open a discussion on election night contingency plans. The site was mostly down during the debates, and seems to be having issues keeping up even now. Given that, it seems likely that we're going to have problems on election night.
While twitter and various other sites are good to keep up on election results, I really like to read the posts from like-minded individuals. Right now, FR seems to be the best place for that. In the event FR does go down, what sites do others use as an alternative?
I know that we have the FreeRepublic2 Group on Yahoo, but personally I find that site virtually unusable. It would be great to know if there are other alternatives.
Freeper Jelly Bean created the altFreeRepublic forum years ago, during one of the times when FR was down hard. Since then, the URL to her site has been posted here hundreds of times. It gets a mention on almost every thread where people share addresses to back-up forums.
I created a back-up forum myself, but I sort of consider it second-tier to hers.
Or, search on “free republic alternate site”
Bump for election night
Seems like over the past year its gone downhill.Yes, that is my perception of things as well.
I don't know the cause. Is it additional traffic? Looking at Alexa - seems like traffic is flat. Maybe it's the accumulation of all the posts for so many years causing the database performance to drop off. Or maybe there was some change to the software that caused a problem. Maybe they bought a bad server and it crashes a lot. I don't know, and no one seems to be talking.
Do you want to go ahead and put in for a wake up call now, or wait until a little closer?!
yes, i won’t be sending people to that other IRC site. I don’t think ag would appreciate a huge influx of uninvited guests to his server.Oh, I was just hoping you might consider forgetting about your old grudge, so our little private club could have the correct size again ;-)
BTW - what does “tcot” stand for anyway?I think it stands for true conservatives on twitter.
On debate nights, I couldn’t access FR, period. I would try over and over, just couldn’t get through. Acted like a website with a DOS issue...my attempts would just time out and wouldn’t connect.
I ended up over on Daily Caller, just watching the feed, didn’t try to interact, but at least could see others opinions and commentary. It was fast paced, but I would have preferred to be on FR...just wasn’t going to happen for me.
I’ll try on election night, but have figured the same issues would exist.
Don’t forget the Alka Seltzer for the next day.
I hope you’re passed out by 8:05 PM.
Jim has an official page on Facebook for when this site is overtaxed....like today. It comes in very handy in emergencies!
This is the question that I'm screwing up for verification:
What party is associated with the GOP?
So far I've answered:
I'm stumped and can't sign up any help is appreciated :)
Thanks for the invite. I’ll bring a bottle of wine.
Thank you, dear Scutter. Would have replied earlier but for inability to access. I have more regret than anyone, but I don’t think anyone understands that I have virtually no access to FR, but intermittently. I was not exaggerating that each function is a 30 minute drag EACH, from ability to sign on, click article, click reply, click post. THAT is in the neighborhood of an hour and a half to two hours.
This has been ever since the day BEFORE the last debate. It’s a sin against the use of my time and certainly my monthly penance and can’t be helpful to my general disposition. LOL!
As for loading other websites, we are all forced to go where we find access in order to even follow historic moments, and with ease and comfort and no hassle to the nerves or blood pressure.
I will say that in this particular hour I followed Jim’s suggestion on how to modify the side bar to strip excess loading. It has helped a LOT.
IF it HOLDS, I will come down from the ledge. LOL! And thanks. We shall see.

There are a few individuals that have an @freerepublic moniker or something similar you can look for @freerepublic on there that’s what I found. So maybe I took a bit if a leap there.
And yeah I’m hoping to either be passed out or at least dancing in the living room by 9.
I am not worried, no work the next day so I am good and only a block from the hospital I work at. Also I get preferential treatment. ;)

We may open it to guest posting too, if you don't want to join. We haven't discussed all the ramifications of opening it to guests yet, just something we are considering at the moment.
I am not sure what I would totally do if this site went out for good. But I have some ideas. GOPBriefingRoom seems like a nice alternative, but there is currently very few people using it. But I joined it last year.
I joined Hannity’s forum a while back. They tend to engage in discussions. I know people on this site dislike I Hannity sometimes. I just joined it a while back to engage in discussion threads. Since he once ran his show with Colmes, the forums do allow leftists.
I mostly would go to various sites amd comment there. Places like the Blaze, daily Caller and the Breitbart sites.
I also could go to some other forums I found over the years like the tea party forums, conservative underground and the conservative cave. But I never joined them before.
I would say Free Republic’s facebook page is ok. But it is not a forum. But a interesting idea.
