Given the recent issues the FreeRepublic web site has been having, I thought it would be useful to open a discussion on election night contingency plans. The site was mostly down during the debates, and seems to be having issues keeping up even now. Given that, it seems likely that we're going to have problems on election night.
While twitter and various other sites are good to keep up on election results, I really like to read the posts from like-minded individuals. Right now, FR seems to be the best place for that. In the event FR does go down, what sites do others use as an alternative?
I know that we have the FreeRepublic2 Group on Yahoo, but personally I find that site virtually unusable. It would be great to know if there are other alternatives.
I also signed up as ScutterWA on Yahoo. Some Indian dude took “Scutter@yahoo.com” many years ago, and although his account is inactive now, I still can’t claim the email. So ScutterWA it is :)
Is there a FACEBOOK FreeRepublic page we can go to in a blackout or down server situation?..........
I think I will get another case of Pauliner Hef just like on Election night 2008 but also I will get a bottle of Dom Perigon for my celebration. Also maybe some xanax for my anxiety.
YES, someone posts FR stuff on Twitter....I get it
Why are some of you sending FReepers to other sites?
This link might not work, because I'm signed in on my account.
I think I am out of here, to go the way of most all former FReepers whom I never see anymore.I'm sorry to hear that, RitaOK. I certainly share your frustration, but would humbly ask you to take a minute and try to think about things from the Robinson's perspective.
As someone who works on one of the largest scale web applications in the world, I can tell you that it's a lot harder to write a high scale web application right than it is to write it wrong. It can also be quite expensive.
I don't know any of the details behind the problems that FR is having. I suspect they are struggling with some decisions that were made early in the development of the software that to change now will require an almost total rewrite.
What I do know is that the Robinson's are fantastic individuals, and that they do care about the experience that the users have on the site here. Personally, I'll stay on FR until they wheel me out the door and plant me in the ground. I do, however, want to have some contingency plans (hence this thread). I suggest you take a similar approach and not give up completely on FR.
Was it always this bad? Like you said, FR was unusable during the debates. The last time I remember not being able to use FR was 9/11 2001. Seems like over the past year it’s gone downhill.
Looks like we have a winner! I’m in.
FR has been very slow this morning at times. The hurricane threads and everything.
I’ll be amazed if I can get on here on election night.

Why are some of you sending FReepers to other sites? The intent of this thread is NOT to send anyone away from FR. Rather, as I clearly stated in the opening post, to make people aware of alternatives in the event that the outages here at FR continue through or start up again on election night.
I think the problems happening right now on FR should it make it clear why that's a good idea.
You'll have to register to post. It's the most well established alternate forums we have for when FR is down.
I think the one Alice mentioned is a friendly site like Free Dominion. Pookie does his toons from there. I know they have a good twitter feed I subscribe to.
Hi Cartan!
yes, i won’t be sending people to that other IRC site. I don’t think ag would appreciate a huge influx of uninvited guests to his server.
BTW - what does “tcot” stand for anyway?
Thanks, Windflier. How would you expect people to find out about this? I haven’t seen any sort of stick thread or post on the topic.
But thanks for posting the link. I will go sign up now.

I was wondering the same thing.
