Breaking news on Benghazi: the CIA spokesman, presumably at the direction of CIA director David Petraeus, has put out this statement: "No one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate. ”
So who in the government did tell “anybody” not to help those in need? Someone decided not to send in military assets to help those Agency operators. Would the secretary of defense make such a decision on his own? No.
It would have been a presidential decision. There was presumably a rationale for such a decision. What was it? When and why—and based on whose counsel obtained in what meetings or conversations—did President Obama decide against sending in military assets to help the Americans in need?

Bullcrap. That Hillary testimony was mere theater. Petraeus is an establishment company boy. And yes, the director of the CIA absolutely knew, in real time. And he also knows exactly who denied rescue and why and probably exactly what they said.
He is part of it. Window dressing jobs do not include director of the CIA.
Ann, Patreaus may not be pristine in this. He has served our nation well though, and I’ll be darned if I’m going to attack him rather than the president.

Okay, dislike Patreaus for not blowing Obama’s cover on the video. It’s my take that the director of the CIA needs to maintain the perception that our clandestine agencies stand behind the president. It’s a national security necessity.
Once that connection is broken, as when the CIA is being blamed for things, it needs to keep continuity of our intel services. Then it merely explains who made the final decision here.

In all fairness, Jennifer Griffin of FOX appears to have found some on-the-ground witnesses in Benghazi with firsthand knowledge.
A news organization needs to verify info before running with it. There’s probably a scramble right now to do just that, because this is a huge story. Were I a news director (and I DO have experience in the industry), I would insist on verification before airing the story, and verifying sources may take time.
No news organization wants to name a competitor that scooped them as their source.

What more does he need to say?
We do not want a situation where the director of the CIA goes rogue on the president. He’s limiting his input in the interest of maintaining that distance.
Congress is where this belongs. If he’s called, he can answer their questions in a formal setting. That’s how I’d rather see it play out.
