In the spirit of transparency, House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) on Friday released 166 pages of unclassified State Department communications regarding Libya. But hidden in the scores of documents were the unretracted names of several Libyans working with the U.S. government.
Obama administration officials say Issas document dump has compromised several Libyans working with the U.S. and put their lives at risk, Foreign Policys Josh Rogin reports.
Issa posted the sensitive State Department documents on the House Oversight Committees website Friday afternoon as part of his investigation into the security errors and multiple inconsistencies in the Obama administrations evolving story relating to the deadly terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. The attack left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead.
However, now the documents are getting attention for all the wrong reasons. Foreign Policy has more details:
Issa didnt bother to retract the names of Libyan civilians and local leaders mentioned in the cables, and just as with the WikiLeaks dump of State Department cables last year, the administration says that Issa has done damage to U.S. efforts to work with those Libyans and exposed them to physical danger from the very groups that had an interest in attacking the U.S. consulate. However, now the documents are getting attention for all the wrong reasons. This probably saved some innocent Lybyan’s life by putting their names out. Now that they know the identity they can’t go out and execute some stranger and say “We got him!”
“The identities of those Libyans were probably already discovered by the terrorists in the aftermath of the attack.”
Yes, this was reported the first week of the attack. That all the files of those working with the US were taken from the consulate.
It sounds like they are trying to place the blame of danger on Issa, when the info of the Libyans working with the US was already stolen on 9/11.
I call BS. I’ve watched Issa for years and years and know him to be a patriot and an unequivocal supporter of our military/security forces above all. He would never knowingly release classified documents that put any clandestine resources in jeopardy. He is too smart and too experienced. Issa and Inhofe are our top 2 congress critters.
Because it is an Obama game. They don’t have the State Dept release UNCLASSIFIED documents because they knew Issa would release them and they could cry foul.
It’s all one big stinking, filthy game.
Why didn’t the administration do something to secure the consulate. Sensitive documents were taken there— including the ambassador’s journal.
It is the job of the State Department to “sanitize” their documents before sending them to Congress unless Congress specifically asks for the originals (which would be viewed in Executive Session).
Having given sworn testimony in an Executive (Closed) Session before a congressional investigating subcommittee, as well as “pre-sanitizing” a Classified document that had just come over the teletype to the NSC, I know that this was a deliberate effort on the part of the White House or State, or both, to discredit Rep. Issa and his subcommittee.
There is no other rational explanation for an unredacted document containing sensitive names to be released other than IT WAS DELIBERATE!
Yup, that's how the political game is played in DC by the shameless socialists. The Repubs have no clue how to play the same game. They try to take the high road, only to be blasted by the lowly liberal/socialists. That is what WILL kill our nation. They (conservative Repubs) simply will not fight back. They want to "cross the aisle" so the "gimmes" think they are working for their benefit - think "bennies".
If Romney is to succeed in the next debate, he needs to state clearly and unequivocally the difference between socialism and capitalism/free enterprise, and why one has made this nation the envy of the world and why the other has failed mankind every time attempted. I doubt he will since the debate is about foreign policy. The squishy middle just don't care about ideology like us Constitutionalists.
I dream of a new Ronald Reagan who understood the differences. I think Romney does, but he won't articulate same so as not to turn of the centrists. But then what do I know?
...agreed.....
If this is what the admin is going with its pretty lame. I don’t wanna see a republican cower in fear when RATS try to put their own guilt onto one of ours. I believe that we have to encourage our GOP congressmen and senators so that they’ll have the guts to stand up for what’s right. And if they can’t stand up to this, then they will never stand for anything.
So relax....we’re on the same page.....gnite FRiend ima call it a night.
This is just the sort of underhanded, double dealing
Clinton and the Obama Regime are known for, it’s
all political games for them.
Issa getting too close to tightly held secrets,
release “unclassified” information to him that
should have been cleaned, then blame him for
the harm done.
Slimey.
Not long after Biden identified the Seal Team which conducted the bin Laden raid, they were lured into an ambush where a helicopter was shot down, resulting in one of the largest mass casualties in Spec Ops history. Apparently targeted and set up for retribution.
Determining the classification of those cables was the Department of State’s responsibility. If they had secrets, they should have classified Secret from the author.
Kepping his damn mouth shut about highly classified operations was Biden’s job.
The thing that proves it to me is that they
couldn’t wait for some third party to make
the charge, they had to make it themselves
to get the credit.
Disgusting, these people play with human life
like it was a token.
Actually, if the State Department did not do their job of protecting those folks in Lybia, it really is the job the the Oversight Committee to insure that nothing damaging is revealed when they release documents to the public. I can understand that they should not be primarily responsible but they are culpable. After all, they are the intelligence Oversight Committee and should know better!
This is if this really did happen as reported!
Bingo! Hillbilly tried to set Issa up.
The Obama Agency that de-classified the documents had the responsibility to redact any sensitive data such as names that shouldn’t be released to the public.
Therefore, in addition to failing in their duty to keep Americans safe overseas, they failed to protect the identity of collaborators and will have additional blood on their hands.
It’s up to the Executive Branch to redact names. If they declassified it, it is THEIR negligence, or insidiousness. Bob
released 166 pages of unclassified State Department communications
If they are unclassified then what is the issue?
In view of the lefts’ penchant for lying, the Libyans named herein were probably working against us. They’re probably the ones who, for a small fee, turned tail when the going got tough, pointed the attackers toward our annex, and helped train mortar fire on the good guys.
They tried at the very beginning (literally within a couple of days of the attack) to prevent any discussion or examination of Benghazi by citing “national security” and saying it was an “ongoing investigation.”
I think they’re going to double down on this approach. It has been very effective in shutting down public interest in other events - IIRC, they did something similar at Fort Hood, where there was a sudden blanket of silence dropped over the whole thing because of the “ongoing investigation.”
This buys Obama regime time for people to forget and begin to believe that they imagined the whole thing, and in this case, all Obama needs is a couple of weeks.
We’re told that Libya is now friendly. So why worry about exposing names of those working with us? We don’t worry about exposing Saudis who work with us.
If they are so unfriendly, why didn’t our people have security?
Operative word: "Unclassified"!
