The CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of last month's deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate that there was evidence it was carried out by militants, not a spontaneous mob upset about an American-made video ridiculing Islam's Prophet Muhammad, U.S. officials have told The Associated Press.

It is unclear who, if anyone, saw the cable outside the CIA at that point and how high up in the agency the information went.

Look more to not only who but why. I have seen some speculation, even here, that this was supposed to setup a prisoner swap deal of the Ambassador for the Blind Sheik. That is why nobody did anything because it was not supposed to end up as it did. The only problem was some CIA, DoS and ex-seal agents were not going quietly.

It is absolutely inconceivable to think that the White House was NOT notified immediately about a terrorist attack, with 4 Americans killed, on the anniversary of 9/11. Romney needs to really hammer this point during Monday's debate, and say to him: "Mr. Obama, stop playing the American people for fools!"

Petraeus already did when he reportedly went before a closed session of congress and said it was all about a video. If that's true he's in a precarious position as revelations come out that at that time the CIA knew differently.
