Rose Garden
10:43 A.M. EDT
THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. Every day, all across the world, American diplomats and civilians work tirelessly to advance the interests and values of our nation. Often, they are away from their families. Sometimes, they brave great danger.
Yesterday, four of these extraordinary Americans were killed in an attack on our diplomatic post in Benghazi. Among those killed was our Ambassador, Chris Stevens, as well as Foreign Service Officer Sean Smith. We are still notifying the families of the others who were killed. And today, the American people stand united in holding the families of the four Americans in our thoughts and in our prayers.
The United States condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous and shocking attack. We're working with the government of Libya to secure our diplomats. I've also directed my administration to increase our security at diplomatic posts around the world. And make no mistake, we will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people.
Since our founding, the United States has been a nation that respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. But there is absolutely no justification to this type of senseless violence. None. The world must stand together to unequivocally reject these brutal acts.
Already, many Libyans have joined us in doing so, and this attack will not break the bonds between the United States and Libya. Libyan security personnel fought back against the attackers alongside Americans. Libyans helped some of our diplomats find safety, and they carried Ambassador Stevenss body to the hospital, where we tragically learned that he had died.
It's especially tragic that Chris Stevens died in Benghazi because it is a city that he helped to save. At the height of the Libyan revolution, Chris led our diplomatic post in Benghazi. With characteristic skill, courage, and resolve, he built partnerships with Libyan revolutionaries, and helped them as they planned to build a new Libya. When the Qaddafi regime came to an end, Chris was there to serve as our ambassador to the new Libya, and he worked tirelessly to support this young democracy, and I think both Secretary Clinton and I relied deeply on his knowledge of the situation on the ground there. He was a role model to all who worked with him and to the young diplomats who aspire to walk in his footsteps.
Along with his colleagues, Chris died in a country that is still striving to emerge from the recent experience of war. Today, the loss of these four Americans is fresh, but our memories of them linger on. I have no doubt that their legacy will live on through the work that they did far from our shores and in the hearts of those who love them back home.
Of course, yesterday was already a painful day for our nation as we marked the solemn memory of the 9/11 attacks. We mourned with the families who were lost on that day. I visited the graves of troops who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan at the hallowed grounds of Arlington Cemetery, and had the opportunity to say thank you and visit some of our wounded warriors at Walter Reed. And then last night, we learned the news of this attack in Benghazi.
As Americans, let us never, ever forget that our freedom is only sustained because there are people who are willing to fight for it, to stand up for it, and in some cases, lay down their lives for it. Our country is only as strong as the character of our people and the service of those both civilian and military who represent us around the globe.
No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.
But we also know that the lives these Americans led stand in stark contrast to those of their attackers. These four Americans stood up for freedom and human dignity. They should give every American great pride in the country that they served, and the hope that our flag represents to people around the globe who also yearn to live in freedom and with dignity.
We grieve with their families, but let us carry on their memory, and let us continue their work of seeking a stronger America and a better world for all of our children.
Thank you. May God bless the memory of those we lost and may God bless the United States of America.

Last night was supposed to be about DOMESTIC POLICY. Why then would SHE have a transcript of the ROSE GARDEN remarks when the debate was supposed to be about other things, specifically, and why would she even NEED a transcript at all, when all she is SUPPOSED to be doing is MODERATING, NOT PARTICIPATING?......................
I missed this until you posted it
‘Libyans helped some of our diplomats find safety”
Really? there was only one other state dept employee at Benghazi with Stevens and he was killed.
The only other American who loved was a security agent. Not what i would call a diplomat. The agent tried as hard as he could all by himself to save the 2 State Dept people.
Libyans helping other Libyans kill us is more like it
0dumbo gets to say anything and no one calls him on it. He is the worst lying POTUS ever.
She saw all the questions of all the participants, and then SHE picked the questions she would use on air.
IOW, she PICKED the Libya question.
When Obama told Crowley to “get the transcript” she lifted up some papers. He knew and she knew.
If we prove he said it was a video on Sept 12th all it does is support his story that when he went to the UN and on the View and other venues and said it was the video, well, he really beleived it because of bad intel. Let's take that lie away from him and accept that he did indeed know on Sept 12th and that he's been covering up ever since.
The only mention of the word 'terror" No terrorist or terrorist act. Just a vague reference to a non specific act of teerror (NON-related to Benghazi.)
And so for Obama AND Crowley to gang up on Gov. Romney to claim the president DID call this a terrorist act there in the Rose Garden is Bull Shit.
Actually, they have problems either way.
We’ve got to remember that less than a week ago, VP Biden was whining “We didn’t know.”
Now, Obama is saying “we did know.”
On the one hand, the “we didn’t know” statement is provably a lie. But it dealt only with the immediate situation. They surely knew within 48 hours, because everyone else in the world did. Nonetheless, they sent their surrogates out to lie about the video.
On the other hand, the “we did know” statement leads to the question “then why did you send your surrogates out immediately to lie, and why did you lie about the video in the very transcript in which you claimed you used the word terror?”
And, importantly to me, Why did they lie to the families about the deaths of their loved ones?
In short, there is no place to run and no place to hide.
I totally agree. Gov. Romney needs to set the record straight at the beginning of the next debate apologizing to Bob Scheiffer, acknowledging that he had nothing to do with the biasness of the previous moderators, but based on the obvious advantage they gave Obama, he will take charge of this debate and speak as long as he wants to on the subjects he wants to to compensate for the first two pro-Obama moderators.
Great catch! I think there will be a lot that will be come out when going back over the tape of the debate last night. As an example, MestaMachine just posted this on last night’s live thread:
“Fox just reported that obama said, at 10:09 PM in the debate, that within 20 minutes he WAS ON THE TELPHONE WITH HIS NSA GETTING ALL THE INFORMATION. So he KNEW within 20 minutes of the attack that it was a terrorist operation. Bill Hemmer says no one seems to have caught that little gem.”
I caught it at the time he said it. My wife told me to quit yelling at the TV................
Heres something that NOBODY AT ALL is talking about.
When the dust-up over the remarks came up during the debate last night, and Crowley jumped in to aid Obama, Obama is heard in the background saying, get the transcript and Crowley just happened to HAVE THE TRANSCRIPT IN FRONT OF HER.
HOW DID OBAMA KNOW THAT SHE EVEN HAD THAT TRANSCRIPT LAST NIGHT?...........
excellent point. wonder if there was a little coordination going on SARC
My first thought when that happened was she had colluded with the Obama Campaign. They knew what Romney was likely to say, and they planned the response.
After the debate, she admits that Romney was correct, but she had an issue with his choice a word. What a bunch of BS.
Pure setup!
And the above is the paragraph that precedes it, a section paying homage to our fighting forces and to our national character.
In fact, combining it with the "no acts of terror" comment that IMMEDIATELY follows this paragraph that lauds our national character and those who serve.
The thought goes: "With great national character and great national servants, no acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character."
Separated by an entire paragraph from the words "no acts of terror", this comment was generic and designed to go with a thought about national character and resolve. It was not designed, by any stretch of the imagination, as an announcement of a Benghazi/Terrorist link.
(stolen from dead. who stole it from ...?)
(stolen from frankenmonkey. who stole it from ...?)
ust for the sake of argument, and assume that Obama did call Lybia a terrorist attack the next day...to me, it makes it all the more absurd what they clamimed over the next 2 weeks. Susan Rice was told by the campaign to say what she said, it obvious. No matter which way they try to sipn this, it only gets worse. The next debate will be a nightmare for Obama.
Also why wouldn’t Biden have said “ we knew it was a terrorist act” instead of
his defense of the video , disown intellegence community response.
Also, why would hillary talk about the video during the reception of the coffins....
This one really defies logic.
Terror? How could this be terror? This was an act of war. There is a difference.
When the moderators were announced, many of us clamored for the republicans to not go along with the list.
We are seeing our fears play out in front of 70 million candidates.
It is clear to any semi-intelligent or better observer that Obama needs help to get through 90 minutes of discussion about his failures and policies.
