In a new report heralded by the NRA, the General Accountability Office finds that the numbers of Americans with permits to carry a concealed weapon has surged and virtually every state now allows pistols to be carried under garments or even in a car glove box.
"The number of states allowing concealed carry permits is increasing," said the GAO.
The report included two shocking numbers:
-- There are currently 118 million handguns in America, either owned or for sale.
-- Some 8 million Americans already have a concealed carry permit, about 1 million more than previously thought.
The report found that permits are not available only in Washington, D.C. and Illinois and that some states have huge populations of conceal carry permit holders. For example, in South Dakota and Georgia, about 10 percent of the population has a permit. In Virginia, 279,000 have them but in Maryland only 12,000 can legally carry a concealed weapon.

NJ says they have concealed carry but they really don’t. Impossible to get one.
Thailand?
What about long guns?
I see I’m behind the curve, I have one concealed carry permit and only four handguns. I need to get 10.75 more handguns to make the average.
Hmm, the missus also has her concealed carry permit, but carries one of my guns. That’s another 14.7 handguns we need to buy.
Oh honey...
That's easy to answer. CCW permits generally require an FBI background check. It's a safe assumption that a favorable background check results in issuing the permit.
Frankly, it's none of their business. The use of the word "shocking" in the article exposes the bias of the author. Ownership and possession of a firearm is no threat to anyone. The only "threat" is the small number of persons who misuse firearms to facilitate criminal activity. A fair number of those are effectively countered by the much larger number of law abiding owners. There is the other threat...tyrannical government. One would hope that firearm ownership by private citizens keeps that threat at bay as well. The general principle of "mind your own business" goes a long way toward minimizing conflicts.
Agreed.
I practice putting two or three rapid fire shots into a 12 inch circle (paper plate as template) on a zombie target. I practice from both low ready and alternately a draw from behind the back IWB holster wearing my ‘conceal’ clothes. SIG P220/.45 ACP, 25 feet OR LESS generally.
I don’t go for the Hollywood 50 yd shot; rather a likely self defense/ personal protection, close-in target.
I also at times shoot on a dark lane and without my prescription lens glasses — the situation I’d have at night at home.
Frankly if folks have never practiced (just a few rounds) without hearing protection, they may be PROFOUNDLY startled at how LOUD their firearm is.
NET: If I can feel certain I can put three .45 ACP hollow points into a 12 inch circle at 25 feet or less, I am happy with that.
It would be nice to be able to practice in a shoot house with moving targets, but that’s just not plausible. ;-)

Something tells me that is a crime deterrent.
Dude, look up! I was responding to the post above, as is a custom I cited it!
What a stupid report!!
We actually PAY people to generate this idiocy??
Is that all?
So in other words, we currently have back door gun registration.
Precisely why every neighborhood needs at least one weapon in .50 BMG.
Yuk! The formatting was certainly lost! Moderator please delete!
Sorry for the horrendousnesslessness.
