Talking at length about a Republican campaign that has been feverishly second-guessed, Paul Ryan professed all will be well in the end.
"We're going to beat him," he said of President Barack Obama. "But it's never easy to beat an incumbent, especially one who's such a gifted politician."
In an exclusive interview with the Journal Sentinel as he flew home to Janesville from Florida on Saturday night, Ryan answered questions about the state of the race, about conservative frustrations with the Romney campaign and about the political debate that exploded last week over "makers and takers" in American society:
Ryan said people who rely on government aid don't do so "by choice" - as compared with Romney's recently reported remarks at a 2012 fundraiser, where he characterized 47% of Americans as dependent on government, having a "victim" mind-set, and feeling entitled to food, health care and housing.
Ryan, who has called those comments "inarticulate," said Obama's policies have led to "economic stagnation" and "more able-bodied people becoming dependent upon government." But he said those people are becoming dependent "because they have no alternatives . . . they're not there by choice."
He rejected the notion that there's a partisan line between Americans who pay taxes and Americans who get government help (as Romney's remarks suggested). Asked if "the makers are Republicans and the takers are Democrats," Ryan said, "Oh, gosh no, absolutely not." While Ryan himself has warned about "takers" outnumbering "makers," he said in the interview that "growth is the secret" to preventing that from happening.

It’s becoming clearer by the day that the GOP ticket is upside down.
Gifted??? You should have stopped at 'incumbent', Paul. Quit playing nice with this commie colonial.
He’s not a gifted politician. He’s a gifted LIAR.
Is it just the "gifted" politicians that make your skin crawl when they talk?
Distinction without a difference.
Is gifted a new term for sleazy?
Is gifted a new term for sleazy?
“But it’s never easy to beat an incumbent, especially one who’s such a gifted politician.”
Its easy to be a gifted politician when the media treats you like a god, covers up all your mistakes, and portrays your opponents as if they were drug dealing pedophiles.
They have been trying to woo disaffected Obama voters.
They know they’ve already got all of us.
So they flatter Obama & let people know it’s ok to like him - and if you voted for him -well, you can fix that now.
GOP needs to highlight the smug and audacity of the Dems the unequal pass they get compared to their voters:
Elizabeth Warren used race to gain favor at Harvard, now we find out she isnt even a lawyer. Is this how its done in Washington? Teaches 1 class, paycheck 300K.
Obama, was he a student granted favors because of his claim to be a foreign student? Who paid his tuition?
Why is it we play by the rules and get no help. My Son and daughter are both Hispanic, I am sure I could have found some Indian blood somewhere. We dared to be honest and received $28 dollars in help from the Govt. They dont play by the rules and cover eachothers a## and get a pass. And have the audacity to brag...I’m from HAAAVAWD.
They are what’s wrong with this country, trouble is who is watching the Fox?
I agree with Paul except on one point - 0bama isn’t a gifted politician any more than Jim Jones was a gifted man of the cloth.
And curse the media for foisting him on a dumbed down public. Same for the vast majority of Hollywood.
Tate = Obama
Jennings = Romney
Ref #84 = Rasmussun
Ref #26 = Politico
Fixed it.
Absolutely!
When talking to people who quite obviously voted for the Lyin’ King, but who are now feeling the sting of unemployment,high gas prices, the loss of America’s Economic and Political Power around the World, and the atrocious portent of Global Nuclear Terror thanks to his inept foreign policy, I take a conciliatory tone. I say something to the effect of:
“What a heartbreaking disappointment for us all. It is indeed unfortunate that our “First African-American President” wasn’t quite up to the job. But we can STILL do something to make it right. At least we now KNOW that The USA can now elect a President without regard to the color of his or her skin.”
Of Course, what I REALLY want to say is something completely different, but let’s just GET RID OF ZERO!
The fact that R&R keep complimenting the Chosen One on his being “gifted” and “nice” while pushing for a change is a positive sign. They aren’t turning negative for a reason: their internal polls tell them they don’t need to and their strategy is working. I will grow worried if the tone of their campaign shifts into a heavily negative tone, implying they had to change gears because they see they’re losing.
When I was in school “gifted” was a euphemism for “special needs child”...
