Years ago I lost my job in my chosen profession due to circumstances beyond my control. So I took on two lesser-paying jobs in order to try to make ends meet. Yet it still was very difficult to earn enough to pay my monthly expenses.
Then I reconnected with Joel and Dave, two friends from my past. Joel had become the pastor of a growing church in the suburbs. Dave had become an overseas missionary, but he was visiting in the US at the time. Both of them, recognizing my predicament, gave me money to help pay the rent. I was deeply moved. As I thought of my friends actions, I said to myself: I have just seen Jesus Christ!
Just as I saw Jesus in my friends, sometimes others can see Him in us. Paul speaks of Christ in you, the hope of glory (Col. 1:27). He confessed: I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me (Gal. 2:20). And he also understood that different circumstances can be opportunities for the life of Jesus [to] be manifested in our body (2 Cor. 4:10).
Do you know someone struggling with physical or financial burdens? Why not let the indwelling Christ express His love through you by meeting that persons need.
Read: 2 Corinthians 4:1-10

First of all, lets get to the matter of pronunciation. His first name is the Russian equivalent of the French name Serge. Its pronounced SIR-gay. His last name has been rendered as Rachmaninoff and Rachmaninov due to the difficulty of transliterating the Cyrillic alphabet of Russian into English. Its usually pronounced rock-MAN-in-off. If you want to be picky and use the Russian pronunciation, its rock-MON-yee-nov.
In his middle years, he looked like this.
What is fascinating is that in photographs taken of him at age 10, its still the same face. He aged, but that face and the short haircut remained the same, except for a wrinkle or two.
He was born in 1873 just outside Novgorod to a family of the Russian minor nobility. His first language may have been French, as the Russian nobility preferred to communicate among themselves in that language and use Russian when communicating to serfs and others. It should be remembered that Russia still had serfdom until 1863.
The family was wealthy, and once it was discovered that Sergei had musical talent, his mother began teaching him piano. Then the family brought in a professional from St. Petersburg to teach him.
In 1882, when Sergei was 9, the roof caved in. Sergeis father, Vasily (va-SEE-lee) lost his shirt and his estates due to debt and bad investments. This was a common occurrence with the Russian nobility, and Pushkins story, The Queen of Spades, is a monument to the fecklessness of wealthy Russian noblemen. His parents moved into a cramped apartment in St. Petersburg and then separated.
Sergei failed his exams in 1885. His mother sent the 12 year old to the Moscow Conservatory to study under the drill sergeant methods of Nikolai Zverev (ZVAIR-yev). This marked a turning point in Sergeis life. He took piano lessons from Zverev and his own cousin Alexander Siloti, who had studied under Franz Liszt himself. He had among his professors Anton Arensky and Sergei Taneyev (tun-EYE-ev). Peter Tchaikovsky was a frequent guest at the Zverev home, and Alexander Scriabin was a classmate. It was the right environment, and Sergei bloomed.
From his conservatory years, in 1887, comes a suite of four pieces for piano. At this point, Rachmaninovs style had a lot of Chopin in it. But there is also an authentic voice for this composer that never really changed. It just got better over time.
Sergei here starts his habit of avoiding pedal markings and just showing held notes, letting the pianist figure out how to sustain those notes, either by using pedal or keeping the keys depressed. These are four gems that give the listener a strong hint of what is to come. Its astonishing that they came from a 14 year old boy.
Rakhmaninov is derived from the Arabic name Raḥmān, a popular name among Muslims. His ancestors apparently came from central Asia.
He has that central Asian face.
Just a funny old act, Jim Stafford plays Classical Gas on the Smothers Brothers old TV show.... Pay close attention to the message Jim sends to the stage hand on the spotlight .....:o)
