...For the first time, school lunches must have age-aligned calorie maximums, capping the amount of calories high school students eat to around 850 calories. The new restrictions all come from the updated Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and are funded by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 legislation promoted by Michelle Obama.
While the changes may seem like a step in a healthier direction, not all students are finding them so tasty. On Monday, about 70 percent of the 830 students at Mukwonago High School in Wisconsin who typically buy their lunch boycotted the schools cafeteria ...

I’m getting a well dug as soon as I can afford it.
We have a nation of paralyzed, infantalized high school students.
Why can’t they make their own darn sandwiches?
My son is 16 years old. He leads the O-line on his football team. He takes his lunch of high protein every day - Mrs. O does not care about the athletic students that need more - remember, we don’t want the losers to feel bad about their lack of achievement.

Belling talked about this recently. Has had listeners saying that their kids are starving on the rations Michelle Antoinette requires them to eat. One parent says they cut the amount of food by half and also made it cost more at the same time. Kids must take fruit and veg that they don’t want and they get only one ounce of a meat per lunch, and cannot take leftovers out, so food is thrown out. Nice work Moochie! Not.
If Michelle would limit her caloric intake to 850 per meal she would look a helluva lot better than she does.
850x3= 2550
I witnessed this a couple of weeks back when I substituted at the last minute at our high school. No time to pack a lunch so I grabbed something with the students in the cafeteria.
Choice of hot ham/cheese on whole wheat bun or a small sized corndog, beans, one tiny packet of carrots and they were limited to three celery sticks. Milk cartons seemed tiny but they did have chocolate. Kids could have an apple or orange and if they wanted chips, they only had Baked Lays. The cafeteria ladies had little signs telling them how much they could take, i.e. one bag carrots, 3 celery sticks.
Most kids seemed to bring lunch. Neighbor is a lineman for the football team. Came home starving and with working out after school and practice, you have 200+ pound kids famished. They are now all packing or buying double lunches to keep their energy up.
My kids started the year buying the school lunches and in less than a month all had lost weight. None were anywhere near being overweight to begin with and actually looked ill due to the rabbit food they are alloted at a higher price than last year. These are normal kids NOT in sports and what they are ‘allotted’ is not enough. I feel truly sorry for the athelets or those few that are unable to afford a home packed lunch.
Much like Orwell's 1984, what conservatives see as a warning, liberals see as an instruction manual.
So this is a one size fits no one calorie intake rule. Same for six foot male football players as for the conclave chested gamer nerds? Same for large guys as it is for small girls? How insane and stupid is this collective piece of anti-health crap?
If I ate like my sons, they would be undernurished. If I ate as much as they eat, I would be fat as a pig.
I was one of those kids that was always a bean pole. I was actually embarassed because I was so skinny. I ate everything and anything available and couldn’t gain a pound. One time in high school I even resorted to buying some powder that was for weight gain.....didn’t work. Finally at the age of 28, after I had a baby, my metabolism slowed down enough that I actually looked normal for the first time in my life.
I am sure there are other kids out there like that that Michelle is starving to death.
When my son was in Iraq with USMC, we were told that they were using at least 6,000 calories a day. I would suspect that high school athletes burn comparable amounts. I agree, Mrs. 0 does not want those who are not athletic to feel bad about not being able to eat more.
But I still can't believe they messed up peanut butter & jelly and pizza!
It gets me that we have to feed kids at school because they don’t get fed at home. Why isn’t that considered “neglect”? Spank a kid and they take them from you but if you starve them, the government lets you keep them.
lunch must have age-aligned calorie maximums.”
There is a whole lot of difference between caloric needs of a 16 year old 4’9” tall female who has limited physical activity and a 16 year old 6’3” male who is also a defensive tackle on the football team.
Glad to see the kids taking a stand.
When I was in school I couldn’t be bothered to sit and eat most of the time, especially not cafeteria food. Every three days I’d appear at the local diner, order, and eat a ham and cheese omelette, four scrambled eggs, two eggs over easy, a double order of hash browns, six pieces of Texas toast, one order of bacon, one of sausage, oatmeal, a gallon of milk, a pot of coffee, fruit salad, and two pieces of apple pie. Sometimes I got a waitress to go as well.
Went to a Grandparents breakfast last week at a public school in Texas. I don’t understand how they considered this a healthy breakfast. My grandchildren got 2 graham crakers, pre pkg, a muffin, pre pkg like in a vending machine, and canned fruit cocktail and canned peaches. They also served dry cereal, apple jacks. I consider this junk food loaded with carbs and no protein.
When I went back to my daughter in law’s house she showed me a notice the school had sent home telling the parents what they could send to school for their children’s snacks. No homemade cookie, cupcakes, cake or pudding were allowed. The teacher would confiscate it and replace the snack with crakers that are available in each classroom.
So now you’re a long-haul trucker, I’m guessing...
“It gets me that we have to feed kids at school because they dont get fed at home.”
The article is about lunches. I would think the kids eat breakfast and dinner at home.
