Political reporters on Twitter are saying they are standing by for a Romney media availability on the video released today by Mother Jones of Romney at a May fundraiser speaking frankly of his thoughts on Obama's base voters and their entitlement mentality, aka the 47% who pay no federal income taxes.

The media and GOP-E have jumped ugly on Romney tonight.

Steve Holland, Reuters: Romney at press avail to respond to video says his comments weren't "elegantly stated," and "could have said it in a more effective way."

I don’t understand it either; in fact, it often boggles my mind, even knowing that those poll numbers are cooked, if things were truly ‘normal’ the numbers would still be beyond cooking.

Quite honestly, the 47% figure may be a bit high.

What percentage of Americans do receive Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, welfare, unemployment insurance, Social Security, etc? If 47% of the public is dependent on government programs, society is composed of too many economic and moral cripples to succeed. I wish the media could discuss these issues more honestly. Our country and our future is at stake.

He should double down, then go on to explain how important it is that we get people off public assistance and back in the workplace.

There are two factors at play here that are part of human nature. The bad one is that once somebody starts taking a handout it is very difficult to stop. The second is that a person's spirit is lifted by making his own way in the world. I remember my first paycheck when I was sixteen. I remember my first direct deposit when I was commissioned in the Navy. I remember how great it felt to get my present job. I believe those feelings are common to most people.

Romney should throw a twist on it and explain why we need more taxpayers and less tax takers. Way beyond the bottom line a guy that see federal taxes taken off his pay check immediately starts questioning how the government spends their money. If we had more people swearing about that deduction off their paycheck maybe more people would see that Obama is running triple the deficits we saw during the Bush Administration.

Hate to say it, but this campaign is going down in flames. This election is going to be a debacle for the GOP.

The combination of a biased media and terrible Romney campaign staff and a terrible candidate will lead to 0bama’s re-election.

It's a conceit of the rich that the poor are just faking it.

Who are the poor?

When I read your comment, I thought of two stories I read on FR within the last couple of weeks - the first that showed more people were enrolled into Social Security Disability than were hired last month, and the other that showed a single mother had to earn more than $60,000 to do better economically than simply living on government benefits.

I don't think those new disability enrollees or single mothers having children to increase their benefits take are faking it; they know exactly what they are doing, and Obama is encouraging it.

What about the conceit of the entitled victim?

He just answered more questions at a hasty news conference concerning a hidden camera video planted at a closed-door event where he made truthful comments, than Obama has on the anti-American riots taking place all throughout the world including four dead diplomats and at least four dead service members.
This upcoming election will be more of a referendum on the media than it will be of either Obama or Romney.

“The point was many people work, but don’t earn enough to pay fed taxes.”

The problem is that those people get to vote to get money FROM the government. My son works. He doesn’t have much. Last year, he got thousands in EITC. I told him to consider it a transfer from me to him, with the feds taking a cut for administration.

But he gets to vote to RECEIVE the EITC. His ‘tax refund’ was much greater than his tax payments. His every incentive, other than his upbringing, is to continue to vote for those who will hand him cash. My cash.

It is theft under the guise of public policy.

Good God, you would have surrendered to the Japs on December 8th, 1941.

Take it somewhere else. Romney will win.

Last time I checked the IRS Web site a couple years ago, the bottom 50% of income earners, paid approximately 2.7% of all federal income taxes.

Review this thoroughly and get back to me about ALL TAXES vs just federal personal income taxes ~ http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Excise-Tax ~ i really don’t have the time nor energy to debate ALL vs. Some with someone who does not understand ALL.

I don't think Romney intends to win any more than McCain did.

We're proving to minorities that "they can do it" by having one for president... and the plan called for a full two terms.

Everyone should pay something. If they don’t it puts them on the opposite side of their fellow citizens - the payers.

Everyone should have a sharp eye on the government. When one segment is doing the giving, and the other is taking, it automatically pits them against each other and they’re not united in their front to keep a limited government.

Flat tax rate. If 10% is good enough for God, it’s ample for the government. Cut the spending and make it work.

Not everybody who benefits from a federal program believes in it, nor even imagines themselves to be an ‘entitled victim’ ~ disabled vets can go either way of course ~
